given the vastness of space, the permutations of the potential of habitable planets - I think there is other life in this universe. I am guessing, in view that there are older systems than ours, that very likely we will be discovered by them. As for transmitting beacons, frankly I don't think we are ready to receive visitors from outer space -- we have not yet put our own house in order.
Because I am curious and a dreamer - that is why I run Seti@home.
