Personal background
Me? I'm a recently laid off IT professional who is heading back to school to update my education. The only reason I'm still running my small seti farm is because I haven't gotten to the point where I need to start selling off hardware to make ends meet. May the economy drive my previous; outsourcing; employer bankrupt and into the streets. No, I'm not bitter, merely vengeful.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do you run SETI@home?
Because pure research is beneficial regardless. Besides, its best that we find them (ET) before they find us, that way we have a better chance of avoiding what happened to the "new world" here in the past five hundred years. I personally have no desire for myself or my children to spend any time on a reservation like my ancestors did, only to be eventually absorbed or eliminated by a more technologically advanced society.

Thoughts about ETI
Are they out there? Are they out there? Is that a joke? Of course they are out there. Where life is possible life WILL exist. Its like that. Thus, the possibility that there are ET's is one hundred percent. Whether we will get in contact with them via radio or not is unlikely. The signal will be years old by the time it gets here, possibly centuries depending on how far away they are. Imagine getting a radio signal from a planet of two hundred light-years away. By the time the signal gets to us, its centuries old. The culture you are receiving from may not even exist in any recognizable form by the time you receive the message that was sent. Heck, look at the changes in Earth cultures since the invention of radio, let alone since the invention of the telescope. Should we send our own signal? Allow me to answer that with a resounding "NO!". At least not unless we can make it look like the signal came from somewhere else. Am I being paranoid? Not hardly. The lessons of history bare my statement out. If we fail to learn from our own history we're just going to get the same lesson from a different angle.
Suggestions you ask? None that I can think of, I'm too busy doing homework to worry about it.
