Personal background
I am a 28 year old living in Minnesota. I have always been facinated by science fiction and fact, I can see that facination in my work as a graphic designer. As a kid, my science projects were on the space shuttle, or the feasability of transporters...

I figure if science fiction is what's outside the door, then this SETI project and others like it are the door.

Besides sci-fi and realtaed topics, I enjoy fishing, boating, fixing boats, reading, and almost anything outdoors.

If you read this and think "what a dork" or conversely "how cool is he ?" feel free to email me, I like a good dialog.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life ? I am not sure it exists, but I am just as unsure that does.

People will discover remnants maybe of a lost race, maybe an old, long dead civilation. We always seem to believe that a race we meet will be more advanced that our own, or will in fact, be friendly. Though Hollywood often portrays "it" often for entertainment value as a scary proposition.. I believe most feel they would be friendly, almost like parents in there advanced, mature understanding of the universe.

If you want to know when ? Call miss Cleo I guess.

The benefits ? already we benefit.. from technology, (though some would disagree) to a better understanding of the world surrounding us. The actual discovery, just like anything, will have both it's sides. Even researchers in a certain field sometimes find themselves disputing hard facts over pure theory because of long held beliefs, not neccisarily religious in nature. Religion would take a big hit, and maybe human pride as well.

I think a beacon is a good idea, seems to me even a whole new race thinks about some of the same things we do... "are we alone?" Maybe what our ideals are, the constitution of the United States. maybe what we look like, some music, or a key to spoken languages.

I run Seti at home because it is a useful screensaver. I like being part of something bigger than myself. I have to admit, I chuckled when I read the web address for this project. I am not a fan of Berkely or it's...liberalism, but I remember looking through my own eyes as a child.
