Personal background
I believe strongly in the strength of being a generalist. I'm a z/OS systems programmer with a background in operations, a GNU/Linux hobbyist building my own systems from scratch, and I sometimes use Windoze, mainly because I have to - for work, and because Wine doesn't do a good enough job for high end games yet. In the past, I have been an engineering surveyor, a mining lab technician, a public servant, a personal trainer and a massage therapist. In the words of Robert Heinlein and/or Lazarus Long - 'specialization (sic) is for insects.'
I live in Canberra, and besides the above, my pasttimes include photography, reading, music, distance running and triathlon and brewing. In the past, I've been into mediaeval recreation, rock climbing and when I was much younger, watching Gilligan's Island and Lost in Space, and throwing groceries out of my pram.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Science is the study of an idea, however out there, to gather data, and to solidify opinion on its validity or otherwise. All those who say SETI isn't real science can eat my sweaty g-string.
