Personal background |
I am ,¸¸,ø¤º° G¤¤§£ §erßµ§ °º¤ø,¸¸, a.k.a. Goose Serbus, a.k.a. The Hawaiian Goose, a.k.a. John Hope, don’t ask me where all the names came from, I forget too. I am 18 years and currently reside in a large English Town called Northampton. I’m a student starting University in September, studying Computer Science at The Nottingham Trent University (so long as I get the grades I need!), but currently I am working a 6 day week in a warehouse to try and earn some money! |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1. FACT: Extraterrestrial life exists! It is a mathematical impossibility that we are alone in the Universe and a completely self-centred view anyway (remember when we thought the Earth was the centre of the Universe?). I think it will be some time before humans discover life not of this planet (probably not within my lifetime), but when it is discovered I think it will be by picking up faint ‘TV-like’ signals from distant planets. The benefits/dangers of this discovery will not come for many years after the discovery, but they obviously could be dangers from hostile nations or advances in science, philosophy etc.
2. I think humans should transmit a beacon for others to find, but it should only contain very basic information and tell them to send something back.
3. I run SETI@home because I think someone should use my CPU time while I’m not, because otherwise it’s just a waste. I think the project is a good idea, but if it takes this much CPU time nowadays to try and find something then it will be some time before we discover anything.
