Personal background
I'm a retired USAF major currently working as a network engineer for the Naval Media Center in Washington, DC. I'm a voracious reader, a gardener, a cat breeder (Cornish Rex), a carpenter, a plumber, an electrician; hmm... I seem to be some sort of modern Rennaisance man. In truth, though, what I am is a major techno-geek. I have a home network, run my own webserver, and enjoy all things computer-centric.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The thought that we are alone in the universe is repugnant and egotistical. As far out from the galactic center as we are, we are most certainly toward the trailing edge of the evolutionary/development timeline. We are, in short, out in the galactic "boonies." While discovering the answer to the question "Are we alone?" might satisfy our curiosity, we would invariably come around to the question "What do we have to offer another sentient species?" If we are able, for just a moment, to set aside our arrogance as the dominant life form on THIS rock, we might notice how little we might be able to benefit another sentient form (particularly an advanced one). Perhaps we should ask ourselves the question "Are we worth discovering?"

As to whether I believe SETI is a worthwhile project or not, of course it is. But like the man who has finally reached the top of the mountain, we should prepare ourselves to answer the question "Now what?" once SETI has reached its goal of discovery. Now what indeed...
