Personal background
I am a 19 year old student at Marlboro College in Vermont, U.S.A. What am I studying? I'm leaning towards Sociology this year, and we'll see how that turns out. Hobbies include reading (I love fantasy/sci-fi), futzing with computers, rock climbing, the occasional tabletop RPG, procrastinating, wailing on my guitar and plotting to bring about the ultimate downfall of all mankind. Being a college student, I frequently consume that glorious caffeinated beverage know as coffee. If you like coffee as much as my roommates and I do(we have 2 espresso machines and 2 drip coffee makers), I recommend you check out Cthulhu Coffee (www.cthulhu-coffee.net) for some recipes so powerful, you’ll think the Great Cthulhu himself is in your cup. As you can probably tell, I’m an H.P. Lovecraft fan. If you haven’t checked out his work, you’re missing out on some of the best horror stories in existence.

Ok, so D4n63r 80y and I fixed up TRON and got him running again. He is now online and you can check out his profile (TRON: The L33T SETI Box).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
What do I think about SETI? Well, humans would be rather naïve and arrogant to believe that we are the sole intelligence in the universe. Well, yeah, humans are arrogant, but not THAT arrogant. Even conservative estimates place the potential number of intelligent civilizations in the hundreds of thousands. Of course, the universe is a massive place, and it may be a very long time before we contact any of them. It may be within the next 100 years if technology continues to advance at the current rate, but I believe it will take much longer. That is assuming that an ETI chooses not to contact us first. Given the current state of our planet, ETs may very well steer clear of us, instead of making contact. Calvin and Hobbes said it best: “The surest sign that intelligent life exists is that none of it has tried to contact us.”
I’m not so sure about transmitting a signal for others to find. We dump a lot of junk signals into space already. I don’t like polluting anything. However, ETs may not be looking for the signals we are putting out now, so maybe we should send out a dedicated search signal. I’m glad it isn’t up to me to decide, because I’m not sure at this point in time. I really just hope whatever creatures we contact are benevolent, because as much as I dislike the human race, I do enjoy being alive and relatively free.
I run SETI because I wish to keep my computer productive and do something with my idle CPU cycles. I think that SETI is a worthwhile project, and I am glad to volunteer my time to the search. I only use my computer a few hours a day, and all that other time it just sat and did nothing. The only thing I could suggest is that we (everyone involved) publicize the project more. The more processing power we have, the better our chances of finding a signal in a timely manner.
