| Personal background |
I have been working as a network engineer in southern California since July of 1996. Having access to the newest technologies is a fulfulling part of the job.
At home I run BOINC on a Dual-Xeon Windows server.
My other hobbies include renewable energy, refrigeration, electrical and plumbing, and auto repair and performance modification. I have a small solar array and wind generator interconnected to the inverter and battery back-up system the server runs from. My work units, in part, are being processed by sunlight! |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
| I grew up in northern Ohio. From even the earliest memories I can recall, the clear night sky has always provided boundless fascination. Living in SoCal now I don't get that view anymore, but still make a point to stargaze when my travels take me far enough from here. Sometimes when it's quiet I like to try to imagine the vastness of what we see at night. For me at least, the biggest barrier is the mind's inability to make sense out of something infinite. For example I can't comprehend standing on a straight line that extends forever in front of and behind me. What if the line was a road? If all the material in the universe was used to make the road it would still have a beginning and an end! And where would it go? How long does it take to make a road like that? It cannot be imagined - generates a cranial STACK OVERFLOW every time! It's my awareness of this human limitation that makes it so impossible for me to believe that we are the only ones out there. We just need to figure out where to look. |
