Profile: Rick Bivans

Personal background
I am a Computer Systems Consultant living (and working) in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. I enjoy outdoor activities (golf, hiking, hunting, lifting weights, etc.) when I am away from the work computer. The picture of me is what I should look like in a couple more years. ;-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe in the SETI project. I feel that using the resources of the computing masses not only accelerates the progress of searching the heavens, but also furthers the advancement of distributed computing. The techniques learned from this project can (and will) be applied to many future projects. Projects that would have been cost prohibited on super-computers, but are affordable on distributed systems.

I am also very pleased to know that my systems are performing useful work, instead of just burning power in idle cycles.

We will find intelligence out there, somewhere. If we are the only intellegent life, then the universe is a tremendous waste of space. The probability of finding life is in our favor, just because of the shear number of planetary systems in this galaxy alone.
**
It would be nice to find other life (intelligent or not) outside our own world, but I do not believe we, as a people, are technologically advanced enough to interact with other life forms. We need great advancements in medicine, space travel, and defence before we are ever ready to deal with other life. We also need to improve our own ability to get-along with each other here on Earth.
