Personal background
I'm a current student at Florida International University and my major includes Computer Science and Computer Information Systems and/or Database Systems Administration. I'm 21 years old and have also 2 jobs which occupy most of my time just leaving me barely with any time to study at all but life is complicated, what do you expect? My hobbies are working and entomology. I have been living in Miami for the past 6 years since I came from Cuba escaping its horrible government. That is it...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
First of all, I don't know why do people always refer to extraterrestrial life as being some kind of 2-legged human-like intelligent organism. I believe that it is much more probable, 99% that we find life not "as we know it", instead I believe that if life evolved so different within the earth, extrasolar life is nothing like we have ever seen. The most probable findings will be "single celled" organisms or maybe plant-like, bacteria or something similar. I put single celled organisms in quotation because life "as we know it" depends primarily on H2O, besides C, O, or other highly reactive elements which are easily combined to form chains or complex compounds. That is our understanding of life but: "Why does it have to be equal or even similar to our own"? I believe it is a debate between knowledge, science, technology and philosophical. I might be wrong but this is my point of view. Maybe we will find simple forms of life out there within our lifetime, or maybe intelligent being able to comunicate with us at our own level of understanding. This later question has always been in my mind. Let's say we find intelligent life out there, How will we know it is intelligent? Will it share common behavior or even the same communication level? Will it be able to understand us and vice versa at any point? I believe it is a very divergent point of view. Nonetheless it is up to all of us to try and resolve this questions to be able to completely undertand the universe, the way it formed and understand ourselves.
