Personal background
A 45-year-old teacher of English since 1981, a computer user also since 1981 (ZX-81 - ring a bell?), in love with astronomy, the night sky, science fiction (and also "mainstream" literature and poetry), music (all kinds except for heavy metal - I can find something in everything, and I mean it), my son, and life in general. Also, I believe very much in giving (being a teacher and a father, I guess it's natural).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. If they are out there, and if they want to talk, we should try and listen. If they are benevolent, and more intelligent, fine. If they are not - well, we will change as a species either way.

2. THIS is what computers and the Internet are really for - OK, e-mail is also great, downloading illegal MP3's is fun, but then what? So now we can apply our technology to something that will return more benefits in the future.

3. It should be easier to send and receive work units on other machines. I have two or three computers on my home network - sometimes they are all on and connected to the Internet, sometimes they're not. So when the "others" finish their work, maybe they could send the units to the "main" machine, the one that's got the primary Internet connection, and when this "main" machine is connected it can send all the results to SETI, get the new units for the "other" machines (with a couple of extra units maybe?), and distribute them whenever the "others" become active.
