Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe it is impossible that we are the only 'sentient' life, but whether we can comminucate with other lifeforms, is something yet to be determined.

I believe that the majority of humanity could cope with the discovery 'we are not alone', as humanity has an amazing combination of self-belief/delusion. How I would cope, I really don't know.

Possible Advantages to Meet ET's.

The sum of human knowledge will be greatly expanded. To what use this knowledge is put to has serious implications.

Disadvantages.

The age of question of: If we find themor them find us, will we/they be civil to each other or is war a possibility.

Our way of life will, fundamently alter after such a discovery, for the better, only time will tell.

2.
I think we should, but would sending probes, be better? Knowing where to send them is a problem, but a combination of beacon and probe?

3.
I run SETI, as it is just a matter of time, before life is discover, whether it reveals itself to use or we find it, is up to chance.
