Personal background
I'm a 49 year old process technician living in Mandurah, Western Australia. Married to Linda for 22 years with 2 grown-up girls. The idea that we might share the universe with other civilisations has always held a mild facination for me. After seeing a TV program about the SETI institute and "SETI at home" I decided to give it a go.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think there is a high probability that extraterrestrial life in some form must exist on other planets where the conditions are right. That these planets are not out there among the billiions seems inconcievable.

The benefits/dangers of a discovery are the same as they have always been for earthbound explorers. Knowledge, trade, technology, cultural exchange as against possible hostile contact. We're an inquisitive mob and fear has'nt stopped us so far.

I'm not so sure about transmitting a beacon. But I suppose it's preferable to ET discovering us by accident. Imagine them stumbling across a telecast of Jerry Springer or some such. We'd be blacklisted forever from contact. I'm sure intelligent species would have some kind of prime directive covering such matters.
