Personal background
I am a 30 something Linux lover and my home computer is almost always running seti at home. While at work, I keep the National Center for Computation Hydroscience computers/networks running.

If I could go back in time, I would visit the Great Library of Alexandria before it burned.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I think extraterrestrial life exists. ET will be discovered by accident while looking for the black hole with where unmated socks live. Thinking of the benefits and dangers can take you from one extreme to another. If we are more advanced than ET, we might exploit ET, teach ET, or sit back observe and learn from the foreign life. Never underestimate the harm people can cause and never underestimate the goodness people can cause. If ET is more advanced than us, we could be exploited, taught, or observed....

2. We have been sending beacons long before we realized we were sending beacons. Thus, I believe we should send specific beacons. I am not sure exactly what information, but it should be conservative in nature. Give a snapshot of life on Earth, but not to much specific information. Lets explore, but if ET is the nasty sort of beings, then we should not give them information that can cause use harm.

3. I run SETI@home because its cool and Linux handles the processing of units well.
