Profile: Philipp Herbas

Personal background
I'm 24 years old, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm currently residing in Stockton, CA. I'm a musician, having recently graduated from the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific. Though I am trained as a classical pianist, my other interests include writing, philosophy, science, and religion. I am currently working on a novel called "The Wheel of Fire." I will hopefully be going to graduate school in the next two years.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Though there is no hard evidence of the existence of extraterrestrials, the overwhelming probability that they do exist cannot be ignored. With hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy alone, it would be foolish to assume that we're the only intelligent life in the universe. Despite all this, I don't believe we will make true first contact until our distant future--probably a few centuries from now. Either they will come to us through advanced technology, or we will encounter them when our technology reaches interstellar travel capability.

I am of the rare opinion that religion and science do not necessarily conflict when it comes to the issue of extraterrestrials. If there is a Supreme Being of some kind, then anything is possible.

Whether transmitting a beacon or not for ETs to find is a good or a bad idea is dependant upon whether one views contact with ETs as a good or bad thing. I, for one, think that though ETs may not have the ability to contact us personally at the moment, it wouldn't hurt to know that we're out here.
