I think it is possible that Extraterrestrial life exists, and it is important to talk to them if they are out there. The potential danger of us finding them is nil - finding whoever they are doesn't require us to contact them. The benefits could be enormous, or also nil.
I run the software on my machine because it's more useful than a screen saver.
