Personal background
Well, what shall I tell you...

I'm a mammal and apparantly one of humankind...

I'm born on the 31st of December 1979 so I'm one of the last wonders of the 70's ;-)

I am a grandson to a sea-captain, from whom I got my interst in the stars, and to a factoryworker/sparetimefarmer, from whom I got my interest in fixing anything myself.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
well.... it would be a waste of space if we were alone in the universe...

The first thing I learned in astronomy is the minimum amount of stars that have to exist in order to keep the universe as big as we know it...

Yes... the minimum...

As we can see on Earth, there is at least a practical chance for life to exist. not to mention the theoretical chance...

So, if that chance is incredibly small, there are still thousands, or even millions of stars accompanied by a life-supporting planet.

The only problem is: the distance.

Although I think it's unlikely that we find anything when we search for radiowaves, I will support the most inventive seti programme. So far, that's this radiosearch...

Why do I not believe in radiowaves?

imagine: radiowaves travel at the velocity of light... we didn't find lifesupporting planets anywhere, especially not within thousands of lightyears.

As we can learn from Earth, life can reach our level of intelligence within about 4 billion years (maybe a little faster, but I don't think that can be much faster). Most stars only exist for about 10 billion years, so that means that when the alien star is as old as our sun, it is unlikely that their radiosignals already reached Earth.

when their star is much older, we could receive their transmissions, but we will never be able to meet them or send something back, simply because their star will explode before we reach them...

well, that's it, very short, if you want a more detailed explanaition, feel free to ask...

anyway, SETI@Home is fun to compete with other students...
