Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
QUESTION 1: We, the human race, would have to have the most colossal egos to
think we are "the only 'intelligent' beings" in the universe.
Because I have worked with students in examining Frank Drake's
equation concerning the possibility of other intelligent life
(if I may call us "intelligent") I know the possibility of finding
those other life forms is extremely remote. However, that should
not dissuade us from looking for those other life forms.

Discovery will probably come, and be confirmed, by doing just what
we are doing: Examining and analyzing cosmic radio emissions. One
of my astronomy professors was very keen about examining those
frequencies centering around the wavelength of 21 cm.

The benefits of benevolent intelligent life forms of a society
far advanced than ours can be phenomenal - likewise if that society
isn't a benevolent one, the results could be disastrous for us.
Somehow at present I feel we don't need to be overly worrisome
about either positive or negative benefits from such successful
contacts. Worry about the effects of a successful search for SETI
I think falls somewhere in the area of our present day society
worrying about the demise of our local garden variety star - our

QUESTION 2: Very definitely, YES, a radio transmission, or beacon" should be
initiated and maintained - for centuries, if need be.

The information that should be sent should be two languages that
are common throughout the earth and proably any intelligent society
would be conversant with are mathematics and music. Each can be
"reduced" to binary form.
