Personal background
I'm an astronomer. I like big telescopes and travelling to the tops of tall
mountains to use them. For many years I taught a course at Harvard, called
"Origins ands Aliens" (Science B-17 in the Core). We addressed all the issues
raised by the Drake "equation". I work hard, but I play hard too. That
includes hockey twice a week, and off-roading on two wheels (with or without
power, depending on my mood). The picture is from the Transdanubia in Hungary, a few years back.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Is there life out there? I'd say it is almost inevitable. Is any of it
technically advanced and interested in communicating? That's a tougher
question. Let's do some experiments and try to find out. That's been
my attitude for a long time. That's why I worked with Paul Horowitz
to use optical SETI at the Oak Ridge Observatory, across the street from
my farm in Massachusetts. That's why I served on the Science Team for
NASA's SETI effort before it got defunded in 1993 (my job was to help
choose the best target stars, something I am now doing for the Kepler mission).
That's why I have been searching for extrasolar planets since 1984 (and finding them, starting in 1988). That's why I have been running setiathome on my own PCs at home.
