| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I've been looking at some other profiles the last couple of months, and was struct by how "naive" some people truly are. I read one where the individual believes we should not attempt to contact other civilizations. Well, hate to break it to you, but its too late! With the invention of radio, and then later, television, we have been broadcasting signals into space for a very long time.
Anyway, I suppose the above doesn't really matter much. If/when we do contact, either they detect our signals, or we detect theirs, we need to be prepared for it as a society. We can hope that by the time an alien civilization finally does "come for a cup of tea", thatt their society has progressed past of the point of conquest, but I somehow doubt that will happen. Exploration and looking out is usually an indication of a young, vigorous society, while looking in, sitting by the fire, is a sign of an older, more mature society. So while we can hope for the best, we must expect the worst.
As such, it concerns me that the richest country in the world is now dominated by an older, mature society (Obviously I'm talking about the U.S.). We need to be in space, exploring, dieing, risking our lives, and growing. I don't know where we got the concept it was bad to die, or to risk your life in the pursuit of either your own, or your society's dream.
REMEMBER, NOTHING RISKED, NOTHING GAINED! The amount of reward for doing something, and doing it well, is directly proportional to what was placed on the line to begin with.
OK, I'll get off my soap box for now. If you got this far, thanx for reading it. Comments, discussions, etc. can be sent to ron@daggett.org. I would love to hear what you think! |
