Personal background
I live in a small town of Chester in Orange County, New York. Its about an hour North of NYC. I'm a 22 year old male who recently graduated from the University of Connecticut. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. I am currently unemployed and applying for entry-level positions. I play the electric and acoustic guitar, sometimes with my roommate. I listen to most types of music, but mostly from the classic rock genre. I love Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and the Rolling Stones.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I was sitting at my computer getting my daily kicks from Greg Dean's Real Life Comics, when I came to a link to the SETI@home site. I said what the hell and I downloaded it. I believe that its very possible that extraterrestrial life exists because there's a lot out there that we don't know about and if there was no such thing as aliens then it'd be an awful waste of space. I think the chances of us discovering life out there is slim because if they're as intelligent as they're portrayed, then they'll most likely be hiding from us. Also, I don't think they'll harm us because we prove no threat to them. If they have the technology to build a spacecraft that has the ability to make it to our Earth, then imagine the kind of weapons they're capable of making. To them, our technology is a joke. Most likely if we were to transmit a beacon, it would be ignored, destroyed, or used by some idiot who would want to put our society in a panic. I think the SETI@home project is cool and if we were to find anything it wouldn't really help us out any. Say we find life out there...how will we get to it? And whos to say that Bush just won't try to destroy it? Sure it would answer our question 'do aliens exist,' but thats about it.
