Profile: Neil Woods

Personal background
I was born in Wales in the UK, where I have spent most of my life. I have
worked on various projects, the most recent being as a computer network and systems administrator in a nearby university. My hobbies include science and
technology, especially computer science and cosmology. I also enjoy reading,
especially enjoying sci-fi.

I've been interested in the possibility of alien life for many years, and as I write this profile I've been running setiathome for just over one year, when I
first became aware of its existence. I now have it running 24/7 on one machine
and hope to increase this to three or so in the near future.
I use Debian GNU/Linux on a small home network.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely have a very strong belief in the existence of extraterrestrial
life. I'm a strong supporter of SETI and related research projects.

What I find particularly interesting in exploring are ideas related to our own sensory perceptions of the universe, and how completely different an "alien"
view could be. Although we can use scientific methods to explore different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and to look for patterns and relationships within this received data, we are still constrained within our
very narrow bandwidth of sensory experience. Work being done to try to "see"
how a dolphin "sees" (i.e. using sonar) for example, may help to break down
some of our pre-concieved "anthropocentric" notions.
