Personal background
I have a cool comp, a bitchin' dorm room, and a no money. Life is good. I'm just trying to find a few little green men to share my time with. Hey, it beats hanging out with the weirdos around here! And, since I'll be in school for the rest of my life, it gives me something to look forward too. I'm sure I have a better chance of finding an alien in my bed than I do of ever finishing school.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I figure, judging by the people I encounter everyday, there has to be some normal life in this Universe. Finally, we have the technology to find it using Radio Telescopes, because we sure aren't going to find it on Earth.
If you take the chances of there actually being intelligent life out there, then combine it with the chances of SETI finding it during my lifetime, and combine that with the chances of my computer being the one that analyzes the signal, you get a probability in the neighborhood of
