Personal background
I live on a small farm in Dexter, Oregon. I work for a software company in Eugene, about 20 miles from my home. At work I am a computer geek but at home I still try to live in the 1850's which makes my family a little crazy. They all want to be in the 21st century. I have a couple of horses, a few chickens, and a BIG garden. I grow way more than my family can eat so I usually end up giving away hundreds of dollars worth of produce every year. That is the life that makes me happy and keeps me from going insane at work.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe extra-terrestrial life exists but perhaps not at the level many people hope for. Most people tend to expect "alien" life forms to be humanoid in appearance. I, on the other hand, would be surprised if that were true. I would not be surprised to find that silicon-based life is more prevalant than carbon-based. I also see no reason to believe extra-terrestrial life forms would be interested in us at all. I feel that many worlds contain "lower" life forms and that "humanoid" or "humanoid-like" life forms will be less prevalent.
