Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extraterrestrial life does exist, the question is whether or not it is sentient. Should there be other sentient lifeforms in our galaxy, I'm hoping that they will be found sometime during my lifetime. The benefits would be phenominal, the exchange of ideas and technologies would be of great benefit to both ourselves and our newfound friends. Possible dangers could be that these beings are not at all friendly and could try to conquer us or worse, they may even view us the same way. I'm hesitant about transmitting a beacon for us to be found for this exact reason, but my curiousity at the same time says do it. When you think about it, we actually have been transmitting a beacon now for, what, about 80 years I believe (first radio then television). I run SETI@Home because I wish to help in this discovery of new life outside of our little blue planet, it may not be my computers that find it, but just the same.
