| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists?
Well, we now know the universe isn't infinite, but it's still pretty damned big. It seems ridiculous to assume that in only one place, on one little sphere out of billions (Sagans) of stars, was life possible.
Should humans transmit a beacon?
YES! It is a travesty that we are not already doing so. The thought of extraterrestrial life learning about us by way of Laverne & Shirley reruns is horrifying to me. We should transmit simple messages, using basic building blocks that are readily known (hydrogen, pi, etc.)
Why do I run Seti@Home?
I believe strongly that we should be proactive -- we should be looking for other life, other civilizations, just as we perceive that they're probably looking for us. Since the government won't fund the research, we'll have to provide the power ourselves, and I want to do my part.
