Personal background
Roughly speaking...

I'm seventeen, male, atheistic, and heterosexual; I'm brilliant, idiotic, foolish, and wise, often simultaneously. My AOL Instant Messenger user name is "ALoversQuarrel," and I'd be happy to chat with you, though I shall be forced to ram an adolescent capybara up your left nostril with great vehemence if you pester me with inanities or uninspired drivel. (Inspired drivel is encouraged, however. ;-D)

I enjoy discussing music, literature, philosophy, politics, science, and the Hegelian dialectic as applied to wildebeest, as well as merely blabbering on incessantly about absolutely nothing. (Actually, that tends to be the modus operandi, now that I think about it...)

I'm attending college and generally trying to get my life together; I play afro-cuban percussion professionally, augmented by web design work.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Given "the vastness of space and the immensity of time" (to quote from Carl Sagan's inscription to Ann Druyan in 'Cosmos') - which is to say, given the current probable values for the Drake Equation as I understand them, I consider it fairly likely that ETIs do or have existed. But the only way to truly find out is to greatly increase both governmental and private on this and other space-related ventures. (E.g. the Planetary Society)

Contacting ETIs would leave the world changed forever, for good (as per the thoughts of Sagan, Clarke, etc.) or ill (given a look at human history and our xenophobic propensities for murder and ignorant violence). Either way, the truth is worth knowing; as I will probably never be an astronomer or astrophysicist, I can at the very least commit computational power to the search, because it's a search not for some abstract quantity, but for a greater understanding of the human condition, and for a chance to learn (by positive example or negative example) and grow from another, entirely different way of being alive.

Plus, I really would like to own a zapgun.
