Personal background
I'm ~17 years from conception, and searching for the question to everything, since I already know life and the universe. I've always been intellectually oriented—when I was little I did quite well at chess, at 14 I started taking Calculus, and in the past few years I did a lot of philosophical thinking—but recently I've toned down purely intellectual pursuits for other ways of being happy.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home mostly because I like the convienence of not having to turn my computer on every time I sit down, but I don't like it just sitting there wasting electricity. SETI gives it something to do and eases my conscience. As for extraterrestrial intelligence, I'd be very surprised to find out there wasn't any, but if we can't even fit quantum mechanics and relativity together yet, I'd be even more surprised if we managed to make contact—find them maybe, since that's more a question of luck, diligence, and processing power, but contact would be difficult.
