Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Absoultely i think it is very shallow for anyone to think that space, as vast as it is, does not hold more occupants than just us. Not only do i believe in the possibility of other life, I believe in the possibility of intelligent life. We must realize that technologically speaking we are very infintile. In centurys to come industrialization of space is imminent, technology will expand and our new horizons will have became a reality. Our great great grandchildren and their grand children for eons to come will think of our generation as the pioneers of space exploration. Just think about that for a minute. "pioneer" to pioneer something means to found it with limited skills, equipment, and technology. Our cutting edge tools today will likely be as ancient as the crude tools our forefathers shaped the land with centuries ago... It is impossilbe to tell when we will discover life elswhere. It is also a little scary to think about actually finding it. I do guarantee one thing when it happens it will make a profound impact on the way we live our lives. The dangers of such a find could be the most extreme threat mankind has ever percieved. The risk of introducing foreign disease into our world, or in the case of intelligent life, even war. Benefits could range even more wildly, new vaccines, new technology, even stimulation of the economy through trade.
2. in many ways we are already transmitting signals into space. As far as powerful beacons meant to attract other "listeners" i think we should be very cautious. As i said before we are technologically adolescant in this field I think of a child burning his fingers with matches or "burning down his home". If another being has the ability to recieve, and interpert a signal from us that would mean they are equally intelligent and at least as advanced as us. If they are advanced enough to respond to that signal... well lets just hope they are friendly as we have absolutely no defense against them.
3.I run seti at home simply because I am all for sp
