Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe, as it was so aptly put in "Contact", that if humans were the only life out there, it would be a horrible waste of space. If we do discover life, however, I believe there is a slim chance that it would come from radio telescopes, although by participating in this project, I do not discount that theory. The reason I do not believe signals to be the answer: we are assuming that an alien civilization would communicate using the same means as us, and that they would constrain themselves to communications at the speed of light. Although, I would be perfectly happy to find a civilization as developed as we are, simply because we would not be 'alone' anymore. Loneliness gets to a species after a while...
I think that one of the best ways for humans to find alien civilizations is to stop waiting for them to contact us. If there is a civilization out there listening to radio waves as we are, would it not be nice to send them a signal so we can establish contact, instead of waiting for them to make the first move? As far as information, I think we should send them a key to understanding our language and mathematics so that we may communicate more efficiently. I do not think we have much to worry about alien invaders, however, because a violent society would probably destroy itself before it reached us, as we may very well be doing.
