Profile: Blake, Leslie A

Personal background
I'm a 53 year old Scot living in Aberdeen (Scotland, United Kingdom) and have been using the seti@home softare for several years now.

I am an Electrical Engineer by trade and work in the Engineering Department of a local papermaking mill. Married (for the second time). Two daughters (by my first marriage) both now in their late twenties with kids of their own.

Recently I have had to recreate an account, since my original ISP pulled the plug and took away my right to an e-mail address (Freeserve did this to everyone in the UK, that wanted to remain as a Pay-As-You-Go customer, when they moved their operation to foreign parts.

Regarding the number of units I have completed - with no original e-mail address I am back to square one (as of 19 May 2003). Yes - I realise that it is still possible to find out how many units I have completed provided that I know my e-mail address and password - and there lies the rub - the e-mail address that I need a password for is 'dead' with no way of resurrecting it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It goes without saying that if there is life, other than ourselves, out there in the vast stretches of the universe then some of it will be lower down the evolutionary chain than us and then again a lot of it will be higher up the evolutionary chain than us. Either way we still get the conclusion "there must be a hell of a lot of life out there".

In the event that we finally make a peaceful 1st contact the possible benefits of such a meeting would be of huge significance to all the peoples of this planet.

The danger lies in the way we humans conduct ourselves - (we can't even get on with each other on the surface of this planet - imagine what our lords and masters [governments] will do when they see outsiders from above creating a situation where their power base could be taken away from them).

As a species we have a bad habit of living up to the saying "if in doubt shoot first ask questions later" - the only problem will be that there will be no later (If ET can get here under his/her own steam then they will obviously be much more advanced than us and will probably be armed with weapons we cannot even begin to comprehend - and unlike in sci-fi books & films we are very unlikely to be able to stop them once they decide to take us out).

As to the idea of transmitting some sort of beacon for others to find - we have been doing that since the very first time Marconi spoke into a microphone and tranmitted his voice across the ether. If ET exists they already know that this insignificant planet has some sort of life on it that has been polluting the universe
