Profile: Christian Homann

Personal background
Hi, or "Moin" as I would probably say.

I'm Christian from Germany, Lv.30 and currently I'm working on my doctoral thesis in functional inorganic nanomaterials. My interests are widely spread from science topics in general, computer and network technology, gaming, cars, beer (yes...typical german in that case, but I'm not a bavarian!) etc etc.
I really like to solve difficult problems, thats probably the reason why I build up a completly functional network of a PC (W10), a Laptop(W7/Lubuntu), 3x Raspberry Pi (1x Raspberry 2 as NAS/Media Server, 1x Raspberry Pi Model B+ as Teamspeak 3 Server, 1x Raspberry Pi Model B as webcam/boinc client), a network printer and of course my smartphone.

My current project will be a cloudbased boinc client with my raspberry pi's, I know I could just install a boinc client on every Pi for itself, but I want to accelerate the computing of single packages and not multiple package calculations at once. Also I think it might be better for the primary task of each Pi, if the computing power is spread to several devices so while one Pi is working on it's primary task the project won't be paused.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Why do I run Seti@home?
Hard to answer, I would support any physics/chemistry project If I had more computing power. But the reason why I started this type of computing was more.....trivial. It was bitter cold winter (-10°C at day) and my heating installation was complete broken. Unfortunatly the technican needed full two weeks for the repair and in order to keep myself at least a bit warm, I let my computer do some calculations. Thanks to my (mighty) AMD 6 core with its 140Watt and my GTX770 it became at least more than 10°C in my living room :)

2. What is my view about the project?
The idea of splitting the calculcation tasksis (because of the sheer amount) brilliant. But it could also be possible that you need combine several task for a complete/correct analysis. So where do you put the line between pure data processing and (scintific logical) data analysis?

3. Any suggestions?
Is it possible to have an overview like in the screensaver but not as screensaver? The Boinc Client is usually running when I'm doing lite works on my computer and therefore I can't access the screensaver
