Personal background
I am an American that grew up in the 70's and 80's when we were still "interested" in space and the technology it brought to us. I work in the Computer engineering area, and I spend most of my time either working playing with electronics, I am an armature radio operator. I am glad to see that our world is again becoming interested in space travel again with the help of the ISS and all of the people involved with that project, also the probes we are sending out (even the ones that get lost on mars) help us to improve our skill and opportunity to expand our horizons as a non-planet bound race of beings. I guess I am an idealist and open minded person but maybe there should be more of us in this strange world of ours.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that Extraterrestrial life exists although it may not be in the form or intelligence that we hope, but that should not stop up from trying to gain and /or share our knowledge; a discovery such as extraterrestrial life (especially if it is more advanced than our world) I think my spur on the next evolutionary phase of human development (giving a us a good swift kick in the pants as it were towards colonizing or teraforming other planets). The dangers of this are great only if we do not do thing such as SETI in that we are slowly but surly wearing out our own planet, and it may cause the release or discovery of clean technology that will help the entire planet as well as the colonization of other celestial bodies. By all means we should be transmitting a beacon of some sort (and increasing its power and range with new development in technology from around the world); that beacon should contain enough information to let other races know that we are intelligent enough and are ready for contact by a race not of our own planet and that we would welcome them in peace, it should also have enough information to let them know the state of our world and how to contact us back. I run SETI@home so that I can feel that I have done my part (even a small one is better than none at all; the SETI project (including but not limited to SETI@home) should never have to worry about funding or equipment, this goes for any project that is going towards the betterment of mankind. I think the only suggestion that I could make is that we should be more forthcoming about discoveries (this doesn’t just apply to the SETI projects (interpret that for your own meaning )) and the technogies and techniques used to make them.
