Other:

Well, for the last few years I didn't seem to have many active hobbies. I am about to finish my BA in accounting ("I need how many GE's to get out of here???!!"), and have begun the path to Oracle certification. On top of that, there's the family, and occationally some sleep! I am of the mind that you need to DO something, in order for it to be a hobby.

That's probably what drew me to the SETI@Home project. I had heard of it quite a while ago and thought it was a good idea, but never got around to doing anything about it. Here I was, up late at night, trying to find information to keep my 7yr old (now 8) son's fledgling interest in astronomy, and lo' and behold...

[b]SETI@Home!

Let's see, new stuff...

Still not quite done with the general ed classes I need, but I am completely done with the upper division stuff. Work is still keeping me busy with Oracle and other database work, so no complaints there (especially in this economy!)

Not crunching as many WU's these days. Only a couple per day now. Bought a house recently and electricity is too dang expensive...

Guess thats it for now.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Is there other life out there?

Yes, no doubt in my mind. We are not so important that we are the only ones around. When will we discover it? Haven't the foggiest, except that it will probably not be at least until my grandkids are grandparents (unless one of us has developed a "space fold" and thrown Einstein's theories away before then. How? Probably some 15 year old kid crunching WU's on his old Pentium 64 800THz pc. (remember I said it would probably be a fairly loonnggg time from now.)

2. Will they discover us first?

Sure, I think we would be insane to think that we have to discover them first. Besides, the Earth already is one giant beacon... they'll pick up old re-runs of Mr. Ed before anything else we deliberately send out! ;) What to send? Something that refutes their obvious belief that our planet is run by talking horses! And quick!!

3. Why Seti@Home?

I decided to run Seti@Home because it sounded like a good way to use my resources. Besides, it gives me a valid excuse for building that home network I have been thinking about! I think the project is well grounded and controlled effectively. It was a great idea way back when, and a great idea now. Great work, keep it up.
