Profile: Larry

Personal background
I am a public school secondary science teacher of 20 years with a PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science and an EdD in Science Education from University of the Pacific in Stockton California.

Throughout my life I have cultivated an interest in observational astronomy from an early age. In fact my parents affirm that as a three-year-old in 1957 I watched Sputnik fly overhead. I have built and owned various telescopes and am an active back-yard astronomy observer. I have completed lunar surveys and the Messier list. I am also an active astro-imager of lunar, planetary and deep-sky objects. I am a NASA/SOFIA Airborne Ambassador.

My current teaching responsibilities at Sierra High School in Manteca, CA include all levels and disciplines of life science including Advance Placement Biology, Applied Biology, College Preparatory Biology, Environmental Science, Physiology, Coding, Robotics Engineering and Computer Science.

This last year my biology students used Kepler mission findings on exoplanets and the Mars Science Laboratory’s search for signs of exobiology as a vehicle for exploring the characteristics of life on earth, evolution and environmental science.

When not teaching I'm hunting with Zoey, my female Harris Hawk, flying paragliders, observing deep-sky objects or playing the violin.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe it is highly improbable that the Earth alone in the galaxy harbors life and even more improbable that we will ever encounter extraterrestrial intelligence.
Nevertheless, the most stupendous event in all human history would be evidence that we truly are not alone in the galaxy.
I would like to be a part of the search team engage in answering this question and would like to see it answered in my lifetime. After all, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence!
I am glad to donate computer down-time and bandwidth to the search.
Furthermore, if ET is out there and relatively nearby, I'd rather know about it in advance and not be surprised by an unexpected visit.
