Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think extraterrestrial life does exist. It must exist somewhere else in the vastness of space. I think it will be a long time before humans discover it though. Discovery of extraterrestrial life would radically change peoples' perception of life in the universe and force many people to rethink their own place in the universe. Such a discovery would benefit us by allowing us (and the extraterrestrials) to learn more about another form of life. However, it would potentially be another species to possibly go to war with. From what I've learned of physics, it seems that space travel may turn out infeasable due to the length of time of travel, and also due to the fact that travelling close to light speed causes time all around you to move faster. Radio waves travelling the speed of light would still take many years to reach distant planets. So, our contact of extraterrestrial life (if we discover it) may only be limited to one radio conversation that could take many years to complete.
