| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Extraterrestrial life almost certainly exists elsewhere in the universe. We may, through SETI or similar searches, find evidence of intelligent life in our galactic neighbourhood.
The discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence would be without doubt the single biggest discovery in human history. We will know, for the first time, and always, that we are not alone. My hope is that just the knowledge of this will bring us together as a species.
We have been leaking powerful radio signals into space for over 70 years now. If anyone is listening, they know we are here already. I think if we were to send a purposeful message, it should be carefully constructed and unambiguous. Maybe something simply like a picture of what we look like, and a symbolic description of where we live.
I run SETI@home to be part of the biggest experiment of it's kind in history, with the faint hope that it does indeed find someone out there. Even if no signal is found, at least we'd have made a start. I think the project is going great, given the relatively low funding. |
