Sounds like you may have a few issues. They have people to talk to and tablets for that these days.

I have had issues since I chased my brother off of a bridge to his death on the railroad tracks below some 40 years ago.
Please do not try to tell me I have issues.

I have a ton of issues that I have not yet laid to rest.

Ever see your brother in a pool of blood on a slab?

I have.

And if every or any body else does not see that as the root of my problems, kiss off.

Actually, I think he meant me :D

He's been telling me to get tablets for almost 6 years now ::)

Sorry to hear that about your brother, Mark.
However many years ago, some things we never forget. (even those of us not blessed [or cursed] with an eidetic memory)

Sometimes you think it is quite impossible to go on. And you open the door to the roof, where it's 6 storeys high and only a light railing to prevent anyone falling off acidentally, but not enough to stop somebody jumping. And I sat in the open door, crying and crying (and I don't really remember why) I didn't want to go on, I couldn't bring myself to jump [in hindsight, can't have been really all that bad, since I never even approached the railing. being afraid of heights may or may not have played a part] and after some time I some how found the courage to go back inside and carry on. Some people are not that lucky.

Luckily it only got that bad once more, when, standing on the train platform during a particularly trying time, the thought suddenly crossed my head that I just had to jump in front of the incoming train for a very final solution. Of course you do leave quite a mess for other people. But when you are there...

Oh well. Maybe you have to have been on that brink to understand how tempting it is.

To quote Nietzsche 'when you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back at you'

What about if I post nerdy optimisation videos here ? Is that OK ?

I don't think I ever saw a rule against it.

I'm in the 'there are no rules, only guidelines' camp anyway.

I'll be glad to pass on the hat. I'm tired of getting hurt. I may have developed a thick skin over the past 5 years, but some people will always be too close to your heart, not to get through.

I'll be keeping the rolling pin though.

Well Once upon a time I was modded for postin a video in NC myself, and violently objected to Eric ( Who of his own accord resolved the situation on the understanding we were all dealing with difficult situations and needed relief)

Try to be a little considerate that times are tough for everyone, and nazi A-hole control tactics are worth zero. Accept you don't have all the answers, and that the future is determined by 'sh@t' happens, as opposed to you forcing your will on people.

You're playing every card, aren't you?
Hope you're having fun.

I am being considerate. Actually I am also being realistic (though definitely not realistic enough or I wouldn't be fighting a lost cause) and I know when it's time to move on.
Jord made 10 years, but I think 5 is enough for me. Time to have a chat with Fred.

Oh, it's been convenient to have access to the hat, sure enough, but moderatos shoud be able to post from the account that has the tag. That was always a drawback to this solution.

Me, have all the answers? I'm not God.
What about you?

There are always choices and alway decisions to be made. And not doing anything is a course of action, too.

Just move the thread if you want, problem solved.

lol. it's not about what I want.

But I'm afraid there's a place for everything, so as much as I like to give Mark some space, and totally understand needing to cool down, this is still NC (at time of writing) and it really doesn't look like an NC topic or NC related posts.
Of course, some light chatting isn't a problem, the panic thread is a perfect example for that, but if nothing in the thread suggests it belongs in NC, then a moderator is obliged to move it, and I still can put on the hat.

I've been making ample use of my discretion so far, but thre's only so much you can get away with.

I guess the next few posts will decide if this exchange is heading for the Cafe.

Why is it that people take a mile when you offer them an inch?

Mark, even when I turn a blind eye I'm not going to turn both, ok?
There's plenty of Cafe space to post music videos to.

Guys, really, this is sooo a cafe thread atm. Could you at least throw some tech in, for the sake of appearances? A cat on a roomba perhaps?

Perhaps, a cat on a hot tin computer..............
Meow?

Oh my. Good thing I didn't own a cat at the time or She'd surely have been making good use of the warm air being blown up through Eve's keyboard...

Can we stay non-political in NC please?

Pfft, probably not ? I call for Number Crunching politics amnesty, until such time as stuff doesn't suck.

Sounds too much like waiting for Godot.
Motion declined.

edit: you may proceed. I think that was enough of an amnesty.

What one who interested in project results, not in competition for imaginary toaster, will chose?

It depends on whether such person would consider the results as the only part of the experiment, or if they consider the pain of change as part of the science too.

IOW: probably making the choices en-masse that feel right as individuals, add together to guide where things will head next. At some point the imaginary toaster/credits will be important, but for now it's more about understanding who's affected most.

Nash's Equilibrium (game theory) would suggest the most helpful situation would be for everyone to run as horribly as possible, so as to expose all the weaknesses. For some 'horribly as possible' would mean aborting, for others rescheduling, for others crunching CPU only. Probably since there aren't known 'best options' yet, I'd say we're likely to end up with a good outcome.

Ever the optimist, eh?
OTOH, maybe it's that bad, it can only get better...

It's not openCL workunits it's openCL app.
You can use the lunatics installer and specify exactly what apps you want to run.

Once the WU is downloaded, it is assigned an app. It can't be ran by any other app at that time. The assignment might happen before it is downloaded, I don't know for sure. I really doubt too many people were very confused by what I said. If anyone was, let me know and I'll send you my snail mail addy in PM so you can send me hate mail that way and keep it out of the forum.

Also, I did basically ask for any way to avoid the openCL, but I will only stay with stock apps from now on. I've had way too much trouble from 3rd party apps.

You can run the stock apps under anonymous platform and restrict the set to what you want. It's just a lot more work than installer, since you need to write your own app_info.xml

And you can reassign WUs after they've been downloaded but it requires stopping boinc, tampering with client_state.xml and restarting. One could even write a batch file and automate the process.

Which 3rd party apps did you have trouble with if I may ask? Seeing as Raistmer's and Jason's work eventually becomes stock...

I just noticed that running legacy with setiathome_8.12_windows_intelx86__opencl_nvidia_sah.exe uses up 1.0 (100%) CPU per WU despite the app_config.xml settings of <app_config>.

And it is for this reason I wish to eliminate any opencl WUs from being downloaded. Is this even possible? If not, I reckon I'll finish what WUs I have and that'll be it for me and SETI@home.

Got a spreadsheet somewhere on Googledocs for analysing Albert data [Edit: may have been seti-beta CPU, will see], Will dig it out on the weekend.

Data from Eve, now sadly demised. Beta iirc, only place that keeps results almost indefinitely and is best if you need to compare stuff.

I'll rummage.

edit: on second thought, you may have a spreadsheet, I've got the original data... somewhere. dang.
edit 2: I did find the spreadsheet though. I can't find the original graph on the cloud. Must be somewhere though...

True. It *appears* and is árbitrary (actually chaotic), because of the faults.

Hold that thought. "Chaotic" is a good scientific (mathematical) word. Just don't call it random in David's hearing (he's touchy about that).

'Three is Chaos'

No it's not random, but the code amounts to fairly unpredictable credit awards (though as for any chaotic system, there are patterns [*]) and to the layman unpredictable is pretty much the same as random. We say chaotic, when we know you could calculate it.
'random' is a word we use when there don't seem to be any rules. Very few things are truly random. Blame physics for that ;)

[*] and if you were in possession of every single variable used in CN you could indeed calculate how much credit you'll be getting. CN IS a calculation after all.

In easier words, it is supposed to take the time you took for a task, award you credit according to how efficient you were (compared to all tasks and tasks in your group of tasks) in crunching the task, [I think in theory, you are supposed to get a bonus if you are faster than the average] and then use the time (in relation to how 'big' the task was) to estimate your speed for future tasks (APR).

I'm not sure that was an easier explanation of what it's supposed to do...

In praxi, we have noticed that it falls sadly short of both making a good estimate of your speed (it lacks adaptability) and of awarding credit relative to your efficiency.

In short, the way in which it was implemented (coded) cannot work. It leads to chaotic behaviour.
