21) Message boards : Number crunching : What model/brand of UPS are you using (Message 1342026)

I'm looking into a UPS for my desktop unit, and was just wondering. We do loose power here a few times a year mostly to drunk drivers hitting the poles on this curvy road I live on. Weather and earthquakes are also a big factor here behind the Redwood Curtain.

Peace :-)>

I take that back. My older Laptop is still getting errors on every Nv wu it trys to work. It works fine otherwise. I have Lunatics installed on it, so I'm not sure whats going on. It's funny (well not really)that the old Garage cruncher that is 9 years old has never had an error since I put it online. She's slow, but she does good.

Yes thank you very much for all the help. the only problem I have now is I'm just not getting the work for this unit. My other two have plenty of work, but this one will only download two at the most every day or so. I've changed all the settings back and forth, but in the end I set them the same exact way the others are.
I'm glad at least I'm getting something, and crunching for Seti. I really have enjoyed, and will continue to enjoy this project, and talking with you guys. I'm getting more out of it than I expected. I'm learning a bit more about the actual pc workings. It's fun. Thanks again. :-)>

Going out to get a can of blow off air today. I'm running mid 70's cpu, and 70c on the gpu under 88% load on this i7 rig. Intel says 100c is max,and that is what real temp is saying also.

Thanks Claggy, I've got mine set at 6 cores and 75%. It seems to do the trick. Probably going to stay with that. I love my laptop, it's never failed me, and I think this is a good all around config. I could be wrong, but it's working ok.

My HP laptop seems to go in hibernation mode when I don't type anything for 20 minutes, so I leave it running all night with its BOINC projects running. But I don't know if it does any work at night. Anyway it survived a heat wave which caused me to stop the SUN WS in the afternoons because its fans were screaming.

In your power settings on your laptop (click the battery icon) you have choices as to what the laptop can do when you close the lid. Mine would go to sleep when I closed the cover, so I set it to do nothing when closing the lid, and Seti runs until I open it again. Check your preferances also and see what they say and make adjustments in there. Hopefully it will work for you. :-)>

Link, thanks for the response. It seems as though I'm on the right track. I just have to keep trying to narrow it down, so that it is running seti as hard as it can without overheating. I do prop it up so that it gets max air circulation. My other laptop I run 4 70 mm fans at it keeps cool, but it's in a differant room that I don't use much so noise fan noise is not an issue. Thinking of running this one on a cooling pad as well, but only let it run seti from the time I go to bed until I wake up. And I was thinking running it 100% that whole period on all cores.

I've been reading this thread, and find I still don't have a good answer to my laptop. I use this laptop for day to day general use as well as running Seti@Home. I let seti run It all night, and most of the day.
It has 8 processors. What would be a good configuration. 8 CORES AT 100%, 100% of the time, 4 cores 100% etc etc. Just trying to keep it fairly cool for longevity, but at the same time running seti at a good pace.
Is this a unrealistic goal?
Any help would be appreciative.

Ok,well I'll try that again. Sometimes I make changes from ther laptop. I wonder if thats the problem. Maybe I should just delete the work unit and run it as the default system. It already says that the default settings are for the work pc. Hmmmmmmmm.

Yeah thats what I've done. the old laptop is (home), the new laptop is (school), and the old PC is (work), but it (the GarageCruncher), also follows the default commands for some reason.

I have two computers the have Nividia gpu's ,and the Hp laptop has a Ati Radeon Gpu.

I see. Is that just a matter of checking the gpu only box in preferances? It seems that PC is taking its orders from the default setting, and not the work settings. I just changed to the Gpu settings only. Now I wonder if the other computers will also follow the default settings. Thanks for watching my back. Let me know if I'm on the right course action.

I've got the Zotac Gt430 (PCI)only in my dell dimension 3000 with a 2.4 ghz Celeron and it's working fine so far. It said it needed a 300 watt PS but My PC only has a 250 watt PS ,and I've got it slightly Over clocked and it's staying around 32 C. Mind you I'm still tweaking this PC with a lot of help from the members of this board.
You will have to download the latest drivers, cuz the ones it comes with won't work with Lunatics Apps. Once you do that it works.
Let me know if you get one and how it's working for Ya. I got mine at Newegg for $69.99 + tax and shipping. Its about the only card with Cuda cores you can get for a pci only Mobo.

Ok cool. Thanks. Eases my mind a bit. I guess I just fiqured the Gpu would be the one using the most resources.

Yes Thanks. Thats what it was running at, so I overclocked the Gpu a bit, and also checked the Cpu box in the seti preferances, and now I have two tasks running, and one waiting. However according to the task mgr, the cpu is doing more of the work but when you look at the precentage and elasped times the Gpu appears to be going a lot faster.
I guess I will just have to make some small changes until I get it right.
