Posted 7 Apr 2023 by Mr. Kevvy Post: You know, there's a lesson in here about possible consequences of both encouraging citizens to own and carry firearms, while simultaneously ensuring the police have both the bare minimum of intelligence and/or training... but it would be lost on the proponents of both of these things so forget it. :^p |

(Message 2116896)
Posted 31 Mar 2023 by Mr. Kevvy Post: Mr Trump, the first US president to face charges, denies wrongdoing. The original was: A grand jury voted to indict him on criminal charges, after investigating a $130,000 pay-out to Stormy Daniels in an attempt to buy her silence over an alleged affair. I read it as "face charges" in this context being implicit as a convenient shorter form of "criminal charges" in the previous sentence, which is correct. No other president has ever been charged or indicted with a criminal offense, though as noted Grant was the first and so far only to be arrested. |

Posted 20 Mar 2023 by Mr. Kevvy Post: Trump has unleashed his last-ditch secret weapon: everything always in all-caps. This will have a dual-purpose effect in now reaching many of his Jan. 6th followers who gave up on the small letters, and/or are more likely to think something is true if it's shouted. Meanwhile the Manhattan Criminal Court is placing steel barricades outside for no apparent reason, nothing to see here and move along, citizen. So, finally, something may actually be happening soon. Maybe. |

Posted 28 Feb 2023 by Mr. Kevvy Post: It certainly will, but I will remain my usual pragmatic self and await the evidence. :^) I always found it interesting that there "happened" to be a major virology lab in the same ground zero city. In other news, Read the label and ensure erythritol is not on it! A sugar replacement called erythritol – used to add bulk or sweeten stevia, monkfruit and keto reduced-sugar products – has been linked to blood clotting, stroke, heart attack and death, according to a new study. Well I feel much better ignoring the "good" advice to go off sucralose/Splenda in favour of stevia or monkfruit (the former which I find tastes like saccharin... yecch!) |

And I am surprised just how often I am agreeing with Mitch McConnell these days... Speaking to the security conference Friday morning, McConnell called on European leaders to strengthen their commitment to the trans-Atlantic alliance and emphasized the strength of bipartisan support in Congress for Ukraine. |

Citizen Science SETI Project at UCLA.
(Message 2114768)
Posted 15 Feb 2023 by Mr. Kevvy Post: [copied over from my now-redundant thread in SETI@Home Science] This is wonderful news as we were sad to lose the SETI Institute's Zooniverse project years ago. If you haven't ever been to Zooniverse, please see the overview below. Are we alone in the universe? project home Project overview: UCLA SETI The mission of UCLA SETI is to find evidence of other civilizations in the Galaxy. We conduct searches for radio technosignatures with the largest fully steerable telescope on Earth, the 100 meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. Our searches are sensitive to signals emitted thousands of light years away, enabling contact from a large fraction of the Milky Way Galaxy. We have sampled over 42,000 stars and detected over 64 million candidate signals to date, with more observations planned in the near future. We are excited to expand our search capabilities by launching a collaboration with citizen scientists, and we are grateful for your involvement in the search! This collaboration is made possible by grants from The Planetary Society and the NASA Citizen Science Seed Funding Program. Overview of Zooniverse: What is the Zooniverse? The Zooniverse is the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research. This research is made possible by volunteers — more than a million people around the world who come together to assist professional researchers. Our goal is to enable research that would not be possible, or practical, otherwise. Zooniverse research results in new discoveries, datasets useful to the wider research community, and many publications. At the Zooniverse, anyone can be a researcher You don’t need any specialised background, training, or expertise to participate in any Zooniverse projects. We make it easy for anyone to contribute to real academic research, on their own computer, at their own convenience. You’ll be able to study authentic objects of interest gathered by researchers, like images of faraway galaxies, historical records and diaries, or videos of animals in their natural habitats. By answering simple questions about them, you’ll help contribute to our understanding of our world, our history, our Universe, and more. With our wide-ranging and ever-expanding suite of projects, covering many disciplines and topics across the sciences and humanities, there's a place for anyone and everyone to explore, learn and have fun in the Zooniverse. To volunteer with us, just go to the Projects page, choose one you like the look of, and get started. Like SETI@Home, it's a "distributed computing" project, but where the participants themselves do the data processing, transcribing, classification and analysis. Hope to see you there! :^) |

(Message 2114339)
Posted 9 Feb 2023 by Mr. Kevvy Post: Sources? Evidence? Only the author's reputation: Seymour Hersh and his sources within the U.S. administration His reputation is not so good; while he has been involved in some good findings, some of his publications such as this rely on anonymous sources with no further evidence to back them up, so are indistinguishable from (admittedly well-written) fiction. I would classify this entire story as such, at least until corroborating evidence emerges, were it not for one detail: the well-publicized on-the-record statement from President Joe Biden exactly one year ago (no coincidence I think!) stating that "If Russia invades... again, then there will be [no] longer Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it." and "I promise you we will be able to do it." Not really evidence, but even an implication from that high up may be worth something... |
