The problem I faced when wanting to throw some names into the pot for this thread became more and more evident when I tried to pick someone that would, in fact, represent all humans. Because there is no global mentality present, it is impossible to please the majority by making a choice. (This is not to written to close the door on everyone's choices here, this is just the problem I faced when wanting to participate in this thread). By that I mean the world is still based on the desires of countries and the people of those said countries. Example: The United States and Russia or Iraq or Iran or....uh....hmm: The United States seems to be not so good bedfellows with quite a few other nations out yonder, so a choice from there would not be a good choice. Let alone the political in-fighting within the US...If a Dem gets handed the opportunity the backlash from the Righties would be ridiculous and vise versa.

My original choice would have been the Dalai Lama, a religious leader who would not be the choice for atheists as well as all the other religions out there. And then their would be the Chinese untiring opposition to that choice.

Point being: I don't think there would ever be a choice that would even come close to making the majority of the human civilization happy at this point. Perhaps a council of people?

Ok, got the wife's permission, but after doing a final check on my MB spec (link posted above), the specs of it say that it is PCI Express 2.0 compliant, whereas all of the GPU's listed are the PCI Express 3.0 interface. Other than this little nugget, I'm ready to buy. Anyone have any guidance on this issue?

An impromtu move of the computers will be taking place today from upstairs to the man cave in the basement. This comes after consideration of the upcoming summer months and my inability to crunch without interruption due to the "heat rises" phenomenon that plagues my computer systems (added humor). This also allows for a cleaning of my Voyager cruncher; double bonus. Normally, I would have run all my WUs to zero before attempting such a thing, however, I found this a couple of days ago and got the ok from the wife to purchase. The catch was: "You ain't putting that anywhere upstairs." So, I will build a bridge of my own in the man cave. heh. Since I have today off, I decided to get the move underway today.

The process will take a few hours; the bear of the process will be disassembling and reassembling the desk in the new location, and running a new cable line access to the new setup location in the basement. Fun fun :D

Ocean as Large as Lake Superior Found on Enceladus
In an unlikely corner of our solar system, scientists have discovered evidence of what they believe is a subterranean ocean. The water means a tiny moon orbiting Saturn could be one of the few places in the solar system with the right ingredients for life.
Much of the article sounds more like speculation than anything else, but still was an interesting read.

Okay, fine. I'll concede. You want a big-a...uh...rear-end bug Star Trek Voyager style? Enjoy! N9JFE called it :D

I have been wanting dual GPU's, however, the point has been made that I may not be able to achieve this feat. Out of all of the suggestions, I am thus far (however, no final conclusion has been reached, mind you), leaning on this one, only x2. However, to the above point, is it the continued assessment that 2 GPU's will not work due to space limitations?

Thanks a ton, folks! You guys are awesome! A lot of ya have eluded to possible gaming - I'll clear up any future or current assumptions to help both y'all in your suggestions as well as myself for possible upgrade choices: This rig (Voyager) is only a crunching rig; the only other thing I do on *this* rig is monotonous e-mail checking, internet surfing and (ugh) Facebook checking. :) Thanks again for all of you guys' (and gals') input and assistance! :)

Even without a fund raiser you can donate to seti@home any time you like using any of the donation links provided earlier.

Yes, I know. Didn't mean to stir up anything. I'm just used to donating when there's an active fundraising thread goin' on. I just returned, so I was looking for an active fundraising thread to post the donation to. Sorry if I offended anyone, as I certainly did not mean to. I needed to hit the donation bandwagon again regardless.

Now that's a very old video card and not all that power efficient.

Now to the big question, how much are you willing to spend?

Cheers.

$500 or less. However, my MB (see above) has it's GPU limitations.

[Edit:] $500 or less, but also include $1k or less options as well for hypothetical wife approval. (Not that THAT would happen, but...hypothetically...)

You could easely update by buying another GPU but first you need to see what is your PSU capacity. I´m allmost sure this will be your first limitation.

PSU

Because of you're question, I'll list everything else running on my Voyager rig.

Cooler Running at max setting.

Okay, folks. I am not tech-savvy with much. I got this Voyager rig from newegg under one of their "combo" deals to specifically use for crunching. However, the graphics card I have is hard to find; I should have gotten two at the time, but I *thought* the GPU would be around longer than it was. For over a year now it's harder than heck to find one, and they're all used, so I have been hesitant to attempt a purchase of another one.

Can y'all take a look at my rig and give me your ideas on what upgrades I can do to my Voyager rig? (Please provide links if you are willing to help me out). :)

Here's my MB

My current GPU (Only have one of these)

My CPU (I have no desire to replace this currently, but thought I'd throw it on here in case y'all have any opinions on a replacement)

And three of these for memory

Lay it on me folks. What do ya think I can do to upgrade this setup for max performance with today's gadgets?

:) Hi Sliver! Not sure if we've chatted before!

Okay. But you need to add some bugs.

Yeah, No.

Oh yes. This looks quite interesting. Also here. Not much details, unfortunately. But for $3k, I expect other gadgets to pop out of it like a Swiss army knife. Or maybe come complete with like a holo-projector or perhaps double as a smoothie maker. My point: $3k. This unit better be the cats meow.

Now I'm in the mood for a smoothie.
