1) Questions and Answers : Web site : New format for pages does not allow sort by column (Message 1837995)
Posted 26 Dec 2016 by Profile Boomer
Post:
A new format was introduced that has a dark background instead of the light background. While that is visually appealing, the new pages are now static. The old pages that contained statistics, allowed you to click the column heading to sort by that column. Clicking once would sort from highest to lowest, and clicking again would sort from lowest to highest. Now there is no sort capability. Again they are non-functional static pages that are pretty much useless.

3) Questions and Answers : Preferences : How do I make BOINC use a different drive to store and run tasks? (Message 1343374)

That worked.

Before you can re-install BOINC again though you have to uninstall it. I clicked advanced and pointed the installer to the folder where I copied the data files and when BOINC started it resumed from where it left off. Nice job. It only took a couple minutes to do.

Thanks, Boomer

I am running BOINC version 7.0.28(x64) on Windows. I have a small SSD for my system drive which is drive C. I want to configure BOINC to use my D which has a lot more available space. How can I do this?

Both are enabled by default. You don't really have to do anything.

Yes there are problems, and these are largely due to the fact that the project suffers from a lack of resources. You can help them fix the problems by providing some additional resources to do so. This is why they are asking for help. Please do.

This is very much like the movie Contact in that the SETI people are always struggling to get funding. Yet, let there be one confirmed signal providing evidence that we are not alone, and the funding will flow like a dam has broken open. That is the irony of SETI, that the funds will flow once you prove it, but without the funding you cannot prove it.

That is why I am donating today.

Initially I thought the title of the thread had to do with why it is unlikely to get SETI work units. ;)

Thanks for an interesting and thought provoking discussion.

Hey Matt,

I was worried for a while there that someone pulled the plug on this project. Not that anyone would ever do that; right?

I am really happy to see SETI@HOME come back online. Thanks for doing a great job and for keeping us informed. Most technical folks do not communicate very well. But, you have great technical skills AND communication skills which is a very rare combination.

Kudos and kudos.

Regards, Boomer

Excuse me for asking a STUPID question, but why isn't the data transferred through the internet directly to you at Berkeley? Sneaker net from Areceibo isn't the most efficient way of transferring data.

Please forgive. Meesa so stupid.
13) Questions and Answers : Windows : No Waiting to Report (Message 958801)
Posted 26 Dec 2009 by Profile Boomer
Post:
Did you mean you no longer see "Waiting for Validation" under "tasks > view" on your account page?

Waiting for validation means your computer completed the job and is waiting for a second computer to complete the same task for verification. If you click on the blue Work Unit ID, you will see a page that displays at least two Task ID's associated with that work unit. One of the task ID's will show your computer number and indicate "Completed, waiting for validation." The other task ID will have a different computer number ("your wingman") and indicate "In Progress."

Once the other computer completes the task the results are compared. When all goes well, the results match, you get a message indicating "Completed and Validated," and credit is granted which appears under the Granted Credit column.

What are moderators allowed to do and when do they cross the line and go beyond that?

If a moderator behaves innappropriately what recourse does a member of the community have?

Can a moderator be banned from the project?
17) Message boards : Number crunching : Panic Mode On (20) Server problems (Message 918039)
Posted 15 Jul 2009 by Profile Boomer

This is due to bandwidth/server issues and very high traffic from clients trying to upload. This seems to be a chronic recurring problem for SETI@HOME. The project is not managed very well and there appear to be more volunteers and number crunching power than they can handle. More details are in the following threads:

You're lucky you have any successful uploads. In the technical news area the recent postings by Matt Lebofsky indicate there are database problems, bandwidth issues and lots of upload and download issues. The problems are being worked on but I think we just have to be patient. There is nothing else we can do.

Run always does not resume a suspended task. You have to select the task that is suspended and click resume.

Run always is used to override preferences (Advanced, Preferences, Processor Usage) that limit when processing is allowed to occur, and processor usage. The opposite of "Run always" is "Run based on preferences" which uses the preferences processor settings specified.
