A asteriod wd 2007 has a 1 / 100 chance of hitting mars. Its guesstimated impact will be near one of the mars rover[s]. Wouldn't that be a ringside seat. This rock is about 160 feet across and moving at 30000 mph.

37,300 from son and myself.
Will have more later, wife is working on some too.... :D

Hi Gonad the Destroyer!
Just a question regarding your pic and points:
How is it possible that the counter shows 37.300 when on the pic only appear seven bowls of rice valued for 1000 each, which makes 7.000 and three small plates with 100 each, which makes 300 and adding all up comes to a total of 7.300 grains?
I must say that I never got so far. Maybe reaching the 10 thousand barrier, it starts again with 1.000 grains bowls? Maybe the webmaster did not plan ahead for heavy crunchers like SETI members??!!??!!!
I think the question is pertinent, on behalf of the pic provided.
Cheers!

GREETINGSmy bowl empties after every 100 points
today's KITCHEN SCIENCE REPORT: this is neat --
i just counted all this out -- it took a couple of hours.
3020 GRAINS of a small grained WHITE RICE (possibly basmanti) weighs 56.34 grams or 2 ounces and MAKES ABOUT 182 GRAMS, or about 6.5 ounces OF COOKED RICE. This would fill your tummy for a while... I pray that you also have clean water and vitamins.
Now i am going to go put some ghee and honey on my experiment and have breakfast!

Welcome all! To the FreeRice (II) New Year's Challenge!

Due to the astounding success of the first challenge, a new one was envisioned for the New Year since the accede the first. What you are viewing is it here.
The challenge will run for 2 weeks, from 5 January 2009 20:00 to the 19th January 2009 20:00 New Zealand Daylight Time (UTC+1300).

I would also like to proudly announce that Uli is working with me to provide the daily statistics and helping me with the logistics of this thread in general. Give her the full credit for the statistics that will be provided.

A link to FreeRice is here. The above and below images are also linked directly to FreeRice, clicking on the images or the link preceding will take you directly to FreeRice.

Other options to donate, excluding English vocabulary also exist, such as:
French
German
Italian
Spanish
Plus many other non-language options.

With the astounding success with the first thread, in which we together donated 1,207,980 grains of FreeRice! I want to up the ante and have a goal of 2,000,000 grains! Starting from scratch.

-------------------------------------

To keep people motivated, there will be 5 stars available and up for grabs, here they are:
- Platinum Contributor. 500,000 grains.
- Diamond Contributor. 250,000 grains.
- Gold Contributor. 100,000 grains.
- Enhanced Contributor. 50,000 grains.

- Contributor of the day. Awarded to the most deserving.

I'm not expecting anyone to reach that milestone of 500,000 grains, but, who knows!

-------------------------------------

This thread replaces:
FreeRice (I) Donation Challenge - 1,207,980 grains donated.

I would to myself pledge a guaranteed 50,000 grains, with an extra 25,000 if we reach the milestone of 2,000,000. Plus 10,000 for every 100,000 after that. To start off, I have already donated 5,000 grains. I hope to see you here and donating! (Remember if you have donated, please, please tell us how much you donated by posting in this thread! I do not accept PM's on the basis of false statistics and accusations of cheating.)

-------------------------------------

I would like to leave you tonight with this old legend:
...When the creator of the game chess showed his invention to the ruler of the country, the ruler was so pleased that he gave the inventor the right to name his prize for the invention. The man, who was very wise, asked the king this: that for the first square of the chess board, he would receive one grain of rice, two for the second one, four on the third one and so forth, doubling the amount each time. The ruler, who was not strong in math, quickly accepted the inventor's offer, even getting offended by his perceived notion that the inventor was asking for such a low price, and ordered the treasurer to count and hand over the wheat to the inventor. However, when the treasurer took more than a week to calculate the amount of wheat, the ruler asked him for a reason for his tardiness. The treasurer then gave him the result of the calculation, and explained that it would be impossible to give the inventor the reward. The ruler then, to get back at the inventor who tried to outsmart him, told the inventor that in order for him to receive his reward, he was to count every single grain that was given to him, in order to make sure that the ruler was not stealing from him...
Sum up:
Note the fact that the first "half" of the chessboard contains 4,294,967,295 grains of rice, while the 64th square contains an astounding 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 grains of rice, or more than a billion times as much on the entire first half of the chessboard. In total, on the entire chessboard there would be exactly 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 grains of rice.

I hope to see every single person that views this thread donate. Please... remember the fact that the total amount of money needed to stop world poverty is estimated at US$200,000,000,000 a year. Donating rice is free...

Kind Regards & Thank You to all contributors that will be,
Luke.

For those interested in Nightwatch--->The Quadrantid meteors

......[quoting]So, get out your 2009 calendar and put a big circle around Saturday morning, Jan. 3.

That's the expected peak date for the Quadrantids, a notoriously unpredictable meteor display. In 2009, peak activity is due to occur in the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 3 and will strongly favor western North America. If the "Quads" reach their full potential, observers blessed with clear, dark skies could be averaging one or two meteor sightings per minute in the hour or two prior to the break of dawn.[ end of quoting]

I SAW THEM, although i did not know what they were at the time. I went to the beach (Pacific Ocean, eastern edge) about 5:30 AM. Very cold. Normally the sky is always foggy. That morning it was not. It was a crystal clear jet saphhire black blue. To my amazement, every minute or so a brilliant light swept an arc - i thought they were some kind of phenomenal falling stars. Each one was about ten times brighter than a normal falling star. Later in the day i found out what they were... Wonder - anyone else see them?

The waiting list is cause Congress only allocated $1.34bn for the coupons and that has all been used up, So until Congress can fix this, Those who don't already have a coupon or two will have to just go on the waiting list or get a box from a cable company or a satellite box instead or buy a converter box without a coupon.

The TV in the living room is hooked up to a cablebox. But the 2 bedroom TVs are directly connected. Those will need one of those converters.

Vouchers for TV converter boxes may be delayed

Think of the coupons as workunits with a 90 day deadline.

GREETINGS, THANK YOU ~: }
