Alien Beacon is gearing up to get its members to join in the friendly competition. Such an event as this is a clear signal that there is some intelligent life on Sol-3 (Earth).

Yeah! Big science projects will be an economic boost like the Apollo project lead directly to the micro-computer, oops nowadays we call it the PC boom.

Studying UFO's would be great if somehow the proponents could back away from jumping to conclusions on the skimpiest of evidence. Scientists studying dinosaurs argue hotly over what a new set of bones mean. But THEY HAVE THE BONES. I saw a UFO once. It took me 7 years to figure out that it was a jet taking off from Tampa Int'l airport 15 miles away at night. Most people don't keep trying to figure something out. And nobody likes to call somebody a liar. If you say you saw something, okay you saw something. I agree that real scientific study is needed. But the money is in sensationalizing reports and far out TV shows, not tough investigation. Let's keep an open mind, all around.

WOW! This is a real wow. When the famous "wow" signal of 1977 was received we couldn't verify or duplicate it. Our robot probes are doing a thousand times more than the "man to Mars" mission that I was in favor of in 1980. There's more to come and I'm gritting my teeth. Will SETI be directed to point their radio telescopes at probable Earths to increase the chance of a signal? How many new planets per month is it now? God has rolled the cosmic dice. Dare we guess at the odds!?

Okay, let me rephrase. What are the features offered by the German site? Is it just a credit volume accumulation? Could we have a sprint, distance run, disk throw, stargate hurdle and alien rescue?

The wow event site didn't seem to say what the event celebration was all about. Is it just to see who has the most SETI credits at the end of the time period? Are there different categories for older or new computers? (I'd like to entery the flyweight with my 2005 Presario) Will SETI have enough work units to feed this frenzy?

The article was extremely interesting (almost as much as this thread) but of course is speculation as, not having made CONTACT, we have no facts as to what any ET is interested in or capable of. But speculation is great in that it gets us to think and look in different directions. Of course the speculation was clearly based on facts we do have here on Earth. But what about that contest that was recently advertised on TV about ordinary people being allowed to broadcast their own messages into space? Could that be like putting a target on our heads?
8) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 7.0.25 completely ruined everything (Message 1228470)

I don't know if this has to do with BOINC 7.0.25 but there is an oddity that has occured a lot more since I put in the release. On astropulse, the remaining time increases as it runs. The total time involved goes well over 100 hrs. I have gotten to suspending the running for awhile and later resuming it. Then the total hours collapse down and it seems to run fine for awhile. Already 1 astropulse task has gone passed deadline & I may have another do so. I've been scanning the boards for any discussion of this and found none. Has anyone run into this before?

The Hitler/Stalin counter-strike against the OWS did not occur. This would have made martyrs of them and put them in our history books. Our police are far smarter than that. The OWS should have created a grass roots political movement to get people elected to office who support their ideals. I am embarrased that they did not. It is clear that criminals have gotten away with the highest crimes you can imagine. We need to remember the suffering caused to poor and working Americans is an open wound that continues to fester. George Bush the Elder saw to it that the criminals of the Savings & Loan scam went to prison and the economy was salvaged by higher taxes to pay for it even though it meant political suicide. I now respect the man.

Yeah! There ya go! Talk about SETI politics. NASA stopped funding SETI a long time ago. But with bi-partisan support it continues rolling. If a theory came out that advanced aliens would have to be Communistic in order to survive the vast distances and time, would we lose all conservative support? And how do SETI supporters present themselves to the general public without appearing wacko? Here's a conservative slant. If THEY are out there, I want to know all about them before they know about me.

Within Kaspersky, using settings, there is application control. Clicking applications there is a tree of folders. Most are "trusted" and a couple BOINC projects are there. A couple are in "Low restricted". In all cases I clicked on the app and a screen with many tabs appeared. The "exclusions" tab offered several choices. I chose "do not monitor application activity". That was several days ago and so far the freeze up problem has not recurred. I'll continue to keep an eye on it though. Kaspersky is much more detailed with more options than I had seen before. I hope others with Kaspersky have seen this thread. It may be helpful to them. Thanks to all of you for your help.

That's a good idea. I remember in my old Norton's we were supposed to be able to exclude apps (but I couldn't get it to exclude Climateprediction). I can't quite clearly see how to do this in Kaspersky at the moment. Will have to study up on it, try it, and let you know. Thanks.

My 2005 Compac Presario is no longer the primary computer and serves as a backup machine but still happily runs BOINC 24/7. Over the last couple months I've noticed a freeze up when it has been left alone for over a day. It's not a total freeze up in that I can still click in commands like logon or view BOINC manager but there is about a 5 minute delay before the command is executed. I've gotten in the habit, when this happens, to just give it the command to restart and then everything is fine, until the next time. I've been looking through your threads for help and believe I've got the BOINC preferences optimized and no hibernation. As additional info, I'm running Kaspersky anti-virus, which got put on a couple months ago, and previously my poor machine had been infected by a serious virus which required a trip to the Geek Squad. I'm hoping you can provide some help. I want my good ol box to keep searching for ET.

Having followed the tutorial pointed to by perryjay, BOINC was successfully uninstalled then easily reinstalled. So far all projects tried have good running tasks including SETI. I want to thank everyone for their help. Perhaps I may ask for advice later in getting a good install of Lunatics but for the moment I'm just going to sit back and enjoy watching SETI run.

The problems continue. A restart did not do any good. An attempt to re-install an older version of Boinc resulted in an error message. A re-install of the current version seemed to go okay but SETI tasks again failed. Then an uninstall was done on Lunatics but still SETI failed and showed "Anonymous Platform" as the application. It seems that an uninstall of Boinc is the next step, but I hesitate. Will it damage my stats or will those be recovered from the web sites?

A large number of tasks have been failing on my machine and I have been asking for help from my team. Team lead Chris Marion pointed me to your threads. Our discussions are on the Alien Beacon Tech Questions. But in a nutshell I started using Lunatics optimizer and after just a couple days the problems began. The error messages are
1/14/2010 7:05:35 PM SETI@home Starting 16fe07aa.26631.11115.13.10.227_1
1/14/2010 7:05:38 PM SETI@home [error] Process creation failed:
1/14/2010 7:05:40 PM SETI@home Computation for task 16fe07aa.26631.11115.13.10.227_1 finished
1/14/2010 7:05:40 PM SETI@home Output file 16fe07aa.26631.11115.13.10.227_1_0 for task 16fe07aa.26631.11115.13.10.227_1 absent

It also showed the application as "Anonymous Platform". About 60 tasks have failed so I've suspended SETI for the moment hoping not to do any more damage, if damage is indeed done. The reading of this thread and a few others has been informative but no resolution is seen. I do not have a GPU so the VLAR is likely not a problem for me. I could have done (somehow) a bad install of the optimizer. Chis thought that I just got a bad batch. Or there's that Windows update to which I haven't done a restart. Should I consider backing out the optimizer? It's not the end of the world of course but I would like my little machine to be productive. Your thoughts?
