Raccoon Update
(Message 891040)
Posted 4 May 2009 by Rhe Post: I've been lurking and enjoying the raccon pics and the stories on this thread. :D In answer to your question, KLC (I hope it's ok to talk about cats here a moment...since you asked!): Also, I would like to ask a question. It seems most everybody here has a cat, as do I. Does anyone have a cat who insists on sleeping on top of them. Isis, our two-year-old resident long-haired kitty-monster, insists on sleeping on my pillow right above my head...as in stretched horizontially and literally wrapped around the top and sides of my head like some weird kind of breathing/purring Russian Fur Hat. It isn't so bad during the winter, but she insists on it during the summer, also... :P |

Swine Flu - media hype?
(Message 889920)
Posted 30 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: From CNN: "It was also learned that a Mexican toddler who visited Texas with his family and died Monday night in Houston, spent a day with his family shopping at a huge Houston indoor mall the day before he began to show symptoms, said Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos, who interviewed the boy's family." Since this news was released a few hours ago the school officials in my area began talking about shutting down all the schools, as well as urging local officials to consider shutting down and/or limiting mall access, movie theaters, etc. There's even been a bit of talk about limiting public transit. Yup, seems the folks where I live are in full out pre-panic mode... Both my mother's and my father's parents (both sets, all four of them) died in the 1918 influenza pandemic when my parents were very young children. Am I scared now? Well, no, not yet. But this pandemic thing hits a bit close to home after growing up hearing about my grandparents and what they suffered through. |

Posted 28 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: > i remember the day i joined - i felt then [back in 2000] as i do now Yup, what the Doc said above pretty much sums it up for me as well (except that I joined in 1999...). The universe is vast, heck our little galaxy alone is pretty darn vast, as well. Expecting concrete answers/results arrving at this point, and expecting that to be the only "worthwhile fuel" to keep folks crunching after a mere 10 years, is extremely hopeful at best, and extremely foolhardy at worst. |

Posted 28 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: Knee-jerk reactions and shoot first, ask questions later are the very essence of Hollywood and yours is just another example. Ekky, mine is not a kneejerk reaction or a chip at all--I've personally seen the reality of situations such as we're talking about in this thread first-hand, both from a military and a law enforcement point-of-view. I've also lived and worked in both the US and the UK for many years and so am very familiar with both countries and their laws from a first-hand perspective, also. I've never needed to rely on only TV news reports and internet supposition for my information--my info on this comes from direct experience and knowledge. You assume because of my posting that I agree with the fellow that left his home and shot this kid rather than wait for law enforcement to take care of the situation. You obviously missed my response in Blurf's original thread on this subject...and had quite the kneejerk reaction, yourself. LOL Regardless, IMHO this particular shooting had much less to do with the entire law-abiding public's ability to own personal weapons in the US than it did with the actions of one man who owned a weapon and made an individual decision--and perhaps that's where the major part of this discussion should remain and concentrate on here, rather than attempting to debate foreign policies, as well. |

Posted 28 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: OMG, she's gorgeous! Congrats to you and your family!! And how special that you and your granddaughter have the same first name, very nice!! (My son was 4 weeks premature--he was one of twins (I lost his twin early on in pregnancy...). My son was born at 19 inches long, weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces. He's now 13 years old--and is 5' 10" weighing 145 pounds. Doctor says he'll probably been minimum of 6' 5" as an adult. I can't imagine how gargantuan he would have been if he were full term when born! LOL) |

Posted 28 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: World wide this flu is currently only affection people in the 20-40 year old range. In the US it seems to be limited to college students who were in Cancun for spring break. So the answer is stay away from college students. Umm, not sure where you got this info from--age ranges of the ones infected in the US are from 9 years old up to over 50 years old who have visited several areas in Mexico--not just from college students back from spring break after being in Cancun... @Andy--Here is some info specifically for travelers. It's from the Center for Disease Control, so it will have actual accurate and up-to-date info for those thinking of traveling abroad. Hope it helps! Travelers Health - CDC |

(Message 887161)
Posted 22 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: I also get the feeling that apart from a select few, we are not held in very high regard by the project administrators, probably at the level of lab rats. They appear to act in a very high handed way toward their minions, a "crunch what we give, take it or leave it" attitude. Read these two points from posters and felt the need to add my 2 cents here. I've lurked around the message boards for a lot longer than I have ever engaged in them and I'm a "teeny cruncher" compared to the majority here, it seems. However, never once have I felt that the project admins, project devs, scientists, etc involved with Seti@home view the lot of us as lab rat slaves who are here to crunch at the whim of Seti@home. I applaud and appreciate the consistant updates, wee-hour work fixes, and info provided to us whenever there are problems afoot...and Matt and the others have never failed to update and discuss these issues with us on the boards (sometimes in great technical detail!). As far as the "camping and hiking trips and music gigs" comment--just as we are not Seti@home's lab rats, neither are they ours. The good folks at Seti@home that work and dedicate themselves to the benefit of this project are real people, also...with real lives to lead. I, for one, enjoy the fact that they are willing to share a small bit of their interests and lives with us here. |

THE Joke Thread . . . Part Deux
(Message 883288)
Posted 8 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: A plane took off from L.A. Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude the captain made an announcement over the intercom, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. OH, MY GOD!" Tense silence followed, and after a few minutes the captain came back on the intercom and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier. While I was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a hot cup of coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!" A passenger in business class yelled, "That's nothing. You should see the back of mine!" |

Teenager shot--shooter charged
(Message 883282)
Posted 8 Apr 2009 by Rhe Post: From the article: According to Parrinello, Scott said he was awakened by noises outside of his home  58 Baneberry Way  and when he looked out the window, he saw three people in his neighbors' driveway near the neighbors' car. Scott told his girlfriend to call 911 and that he was going downstairs "to contain the situation," Parrinello said. In the first article Scott is said to have stated that "at least one of the kids charged at him". In this updated article this is said: "Scott lost sight of the two other people and then the third person, later identified as Cervini, "advanced toward him." Parrinello could not describe the type of advance." Scott also says the kid was shot twice because he "kept advancing" after being shot the first time. Just thought these were...umm...interesting details to point out. Scott took his .40 cal outside with him to confront these kids and "contain the situation" himself while his wife called 911. Instead of waiting for police to handle the situation he intentionally put himself (and others) in danger by doing this. I'm not saying Scott's initial actions were either right or wrong here (citizen trying to prevent a possible crime from continuing vs. waiting for the police which would give the kids time to take the vehicle and leave, if that was even their intention to begin with). However, IMHO he should have left the policing to the police. After all, it's not like these kids were attempting to rape/murder someone outside of Scott's house and Scott was trying to save the victim--they were merely "in his neighbors' driveway near the neighbors' car..." |
