A single response from a single user just does not matter.

In the long run, to Seti, this is very true.

However, I'm guessing it matters more...to the original poster. If we, as users, stop caring about even a single one of our responses--then it follows that we'd eventually stop caring about the project as a whole.

I didn't see his post as whining, but rather as trying to share and validate his frustration and possibly get answers. He cares...and to me, that's a good thing!

Ok, I think you are correct about something with the firewall going on (no longer recognizing it, or whatever). After rebooting and disabling the firewall and antivirus again, THIS is now what I receive in BOINC:

7/2/2009 1:49:39 PM SETI@home Requesting new tasks
7/2/2009 1:51:17 PM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
7/2/2009 1:51:18 PM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
7/2/2009 1:51:19 PM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Failure when receiving data from the peer

So, ummm, any ideas on what failure receiving data from the peer might mean, now? Is it a server issue, in this case, perhaps? I appreciate the help much, thank you!

Windows XP Pro...and Webroot Antivirus and Webroot Firewall. I temp disabled my Firewall and Anti to see if that could be an issue and closed and restarted BOINC. Same problem occured not being able to access server.

The Webroot Anti and Firewall are the same as I have had running all along with BOINC in the past. I haven't changed anything on them before or since installing the 6.6.36 version of BOINC a couple days ago. Could they possibly be not recognizing this newer version, then??

I’m aware of the recent server dl and ul issues. However, I’m not sure the problem I’m currently experiencing is related to that, or not. I’ve searched the message boards and FAQ help files and can’t seem to find this particular issue specifically addressed anywhere…

I recently had to totally uninstall BOINC from my comp. I then downloaded and installed version 6.6.36 a couple of days ago so I could start crunching again. I attached to SETI as well as to the two other projects that I run on occasion.

Now, I get the following messages and can’t fetch new work or do anything—not only with SETI (it seems) but with any of the projects I’m attached to:

7/2/2009 4:24:53 AM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
7/2/2009 4:25:15 AM BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration.
7/2/2009 4:25:30 AM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
7/2/2009 4:29:20 AM SETI@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
7/2/2009 4:29:20 AM SETI@home Requesting new tasks
7/2/2009 4:29:45 AM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server

I’m connected to the internet 24/7 and can access websites just fine. That I know of, I’ve never used a proxy on BOINC before, and have no idea how to “configure” anything for that. Please bear with me here, I’m not as learned about BOINC and SETI as most of you seem to be on the message boards…but I’d love to be able to get this working again! Help, please!

To give you an idea of how much gas a cow emits: if the gas of 10 cows could be captured, it would provide heating for a small house for a year.

But unlike what you think, cows release hydrocarbon mostly by burping.

Ok, but...no one would want to live in that house anyway... LOL

I really enjoyed these "cow" facts! (Yeah, yeah, I'll admit it...I need waaaaaay more sleep!!)

The first President of the American colonies was not George Washington--it was John Hanson, a Constitutional Congress Representative from Maryland. Hanson was the third President of the US Constitutional Congress from 1781-1782. He was the first representative to serve a full one-year term and be called President of the United States in Congress Assembled. Hanson was also the one who approved and authorized the Great Seal of the United States.

First, notice that I said "currently law abiding". Second, an armed man is a citizen, a disarmed man is a slave. I would far rather die a citizen than live as a slave. Sure, I know there are more of them than of me, and that in an armed confrontation, no individual is going to beat the forces the Feds can bring to bear. But somewhere, sometime, you have to be willing to stand up for your beliefs. For me, that line is firearms confiscation. I will not be disarmed, period.

Jay, if someone stands up and believes that they are fighting and defending themselves within a "cultural war", then aren't they fighting against the very society that is within that culture?

No one is standing outside watching and waiting to disarm the masses at a moment's notice.

Someone who abides by federal laws has no risk of ever having to resort to using their lawful firearms to "beat the forces of the Feds"...

Speaking of Thanksgiving and the Guest of Honor, Did You know one Benjamin Franklin wanted the Turkey to be the Official Bird of the USA instead of the Bald Eagle?

He thought the Turkey was the more Noble Bird and that the Eagle was just a cowardly Carrion eater.

Although it's a great-sounding story, the account of Ben Franklin and the turkey vs. eagle for national bird is merely a myth that's been spread in US folklore.

From American Heritage:

The Truth About Turkey and Thanksgiving

"Nor is it true, Smith tells us, that Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey for inclusion on the official seal of the United States. In a 1784 letter to his daughter he did disparage the bald eagle as “a Bird of bad moral Character,” while praising the turkey as “a much more respectable Bird.” But when he had served on a 1776 panel charged with designing the seal, Franklin proposed a tableau showing Moses crossing the Red Sea."

Me too!!! Do you have to carry an epipen?

Yeah, but I'm really bad about keeping it out of our vehicle on freezing winter days or boiling summer days and bringing it inside. I just know that the next time I go to use my current kit it will crumble to dust, or something. LOL

I so need to get a new prescript...

In the BOINC manager you can also go to Advanced, Options, General, and check the box next to "enable manager exit dialog". The next time you click on exit to shut down BOINC from your comp tray an "exit confirmation" popup box will appear. Check the box next to "stop running science applications when exiting the manager" to stop BOINC from running in the background CPU usage.

Pregnant Briton Samantha Orobator may escape death penalty

Normally anyone found in Laos with more than 500g of heroin faces the death penalty by firing squad.

Miss Orobator's supporters are also deeply concerned because she appears to have fallen pregnant while in Laos's notorious Phonthong prison. She is believed to be five months pregnant - a fact which, it emerged today, may work in her favour.

“Another provision of the law also provides that any pregnant (woman) will not be sentenced to the death penalty,” said Mr Khenthong, adding that the judge would decide on the sentence at the trial.

It's interesting to me that getting pregnant while in prison might be the one thing that saves this woman's life. Makes it much more difficult to prove whether it was by rape or purposeful pregnancy, I'd wager...

Bees...ARGH, I'm like hella allergic (even the picture almost sends me running and screaming like a little girl! LOL). I swear if there's a bee within a 50 mile radius of me the sucker will find me and go in for the kill... (and whoever started the "if you just stand still a bee won't sting you!" fallacy well--I'm here to state they are just WRONG!!)

Here's a pic of my squishy weirdo Isis cat:
