Marilyn, one of last season's blond babies, has shown up on our back porch quite regularly lately. She is always hungry. Makes me wonder if she is eating for four... or five. Here's hoping she's going to be a mommy!!!

I have three Lomonosov raccoons frolicking on the ledge above my kitchen sink.

Value? Next to nothing. Kitsch? Absolutely!

Don't care. I still like them.

The servers always seem to know when I'm going to be away. :(

I think I found and fixed the remaining problem.

It was our 25th wedding anniversary and we only went away for the weekend. You'd think the #$%^&*()_)(*&^%$#$%^&*&^T%$%^&*()(*&^ servers would give us a break!

Gordon was a proud graduate of the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He often referred to his undergraduate studies there as the best four years of his life. After his mother passed away, Gordon began volunteering at a museum on campus. He frequently mentioned how happy he was to be back on the campus he loved so dearly.

In memory of Gordon, Eric and I just made an on-line donation to that university.

If others are able to and inclined to remember Gordon in this way, we encourage you to do so.

In 2015 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. (I'm all better now, so no worries.)

After diagnosis I was faced with having to tell various friends and family members that I would be undergoing some life-altering medical intervention for a very serious medical condition.

Some well-meaning people felt that I would benefit from hearing about all the life-style changes I should have made to have averted my diagnosis in the first place. Did I appreciate their input? I did not.

Some well-meaning people felt that I would benefit from hearing about all the life-style changes that I should make right now to maximize my potential for a positive treatment outcome. Did I appreciate their input? I did not.

Some well-meaning people decided that I would benefit from hearing about all the life-style changes that I should make in the future to reduce my chances of cancer recurrence down the road. Did I appreciate their input? I did not.

When one is undergoing a life-altering event, one reaches out to others for care, concern, understanding and support.

It is difficult to know how to respond to a friend in crisis.

Most people did their best to react to my news in ways that were kind, but frankly only one friend had the perfect response. When I told this friend that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer her only response was, "That sucks. That really sucks." That was all that I really wanted to hear because I had little to no control over the past, the present or the future.

Sometimes all we really want is some space to vent and a touch of human kindness. Please???

When I was studying to be a speech pathologist I had one particularly amazing clinical supervisor, Robbie J. She was so good at helping me learn. She knew intuitively when to gently point me in the right direction vs when to jump in and directly assist. She taught me that mistakes are not mistakes if you learn from them and she always managed to make all of her students laugh.

Now, after a long career in direct service provision, I currently work in clinical supervision. I am about to begin clinic with my seventh group of graduate students. I hope to be even half the supervisor that Robbie was to me.

I wrote Robbie a letter a few years ago to let her know how much I appreciated her as a supervisor all those decades ago, and to tell her that I was attempting to follow in her footsteps. I have heard through the grapevine that she is retiring from her university position this year. Those will be some hard shoes to fill!

Well, since we're posting dinner menus ours was rice torta (a vegetarian dish made with eggs, cheese, vegetables and rice), a side of crudite (carrots, fennel and apple slices) and some almonds. For dessert we indulged in some Straus Family Creamery mint chocolate chip ice cream. This ice cream brand is a local company only, so most of you will not be able to find it, but it is absolutely THE BEST ice cream ever!!! If you are a local cruncher, try it and thank me later. Yum!!!

Public posts are an invitation to public comment, and sometimes that includes public critique.

In the Cafe I post about feeding and training raccoons, knowing full well that feeding and training raccoons is ill-advised and that some people are going to feel obligated to make sure that I know that. For me, the benefits of sharing my love of urban wildlife with forum friends far outweigh the very legitimate posted feedback I get from time to time about why feeding and training urban wildlife is a bad idea.

Balance of feedback is really what keeps me posting about my urban wildlife adventures. Most of the feedback I receive is pleasant. Some of the feedback I receive is negative. Those who give me negative feedback are, quite frankly, 100% correct. Feeding and training raccoons is not a good idea. Raccoons are wild animals. They bite. They carry diseases. They should not be encouraged to interact with people. They should not be demeaned by being taught "tricks". All of these statements are true, and yet I continue to feed and train raccoons.

If I received negative feedback to 90% of my posts about raccoons, I would not stop feeding raccoons. I would just stop posting about feeding raccoons. Perhaps I flatter myself, but I think some might miss my crazy little raccoon-based contributions to our community. I know that personally, I would miss the contributions of most members of our community if they stopped posting because 90% of the feedback they received was critical.

Public posts are an invitation to public comment and sometimes that includes public critique, but if you have shared your legitimate concerns about a topic once or twice, then thank you. You have shared your concerns and they have been noted. On-going critiques only drive the subject matter of a thread further and further off topic.

Seti finds lots of signs of intelligent life... the signals come from Earth! There is a whole lot of radio frequency interference (RFI) that looks, initially, like it might be "interesting". That is why data are processed from different angles and by different crunchers.
