Paul...Brilliant, simply brilliant!...and that's exactly what I did; attached to another projet. Gee, I never wudda thoughta that! Thanks.

To follow up on yesterdays hiccup, all seems to be working well again. When I get done with the current batch of Rosetta@Home, it'll be full speed (such as it is) on SETI.

Please excuse me...

I cleaned out the accumulated dust from my computer, turned it on, restarted BOINC and found all my my work units had gone to Client Error. Abandoned them (sorry wingmen), downloaded more, got the same result, abandoned them (sorry again), uninstalled and reinstalled BOINC and now the project informs me I have exceeded the 26 work units allowed per day (that seems unusual in itself since I've had more than 100 in the cache) and no more would be downloaded. In all other ways the computer is operating normally. Do I just wait for a day to pass and resume tomorrow or is there some other thing I can do to get back up and crunching? Thanks.

Using a ZeroTherm Nirvana here. Very good value and works very well. Google for test results. I believe Intel says the Q6600 is in the red zone at 71C. However, as Mark says, less is better and 50C - 55C seems to be the accepted target for stability and durability. Lot's of choices out there in the US$50- $70 range that will do just as well. Good Luck.

I may have missed it somewhere in this long and winding thread but....when might this new optimized app become available to us bottom feeders?

I, too am rude for not saying THANKS! to all involved in this project. In my defense, I was ignorant of how this all came to be and who all the actors were. No more. My eyes have been opened and I've seen the light. Thanks Jason Gee and thanks Lunatics.

I have great confidence in the statements above :-)

Ooooh! Ooooh! Got another one....MacRipper...(inspired by Kitty Claw). I'm quite confident these are good names (see below).

JD..I'm standing in a line that's probably...ummmm...say 3000 crunchers long to say thanks. So here it is. Thank you very much!

Here are a few suggestions for possible names for your accomplishment....

"WhalePort"...hmmmm....biggest whaling port in the US is (was) Nantucket...."Nantucket" (sounds like an Intel project).....or "KillerWhale"....or "Cream of Whale" (bad mental image, that)..."Chicken Of The Sea" (!?)...or maybe "Jonah" for the biblical or "Ahab" for those both literary and spiritual....."QueeQueg" (Nah...that's certainly misspelled))...."Ishmael" (here we go again)..."Harpoon" (kinda like that one)......msattler should like this one...."JD Whale's Cream Of Baby Harp Seal, Kitty Lip Lickin' Good" (oh now....really you've gone too far! This has gotta stop!.....

I'm assuming 'Interest Falling Away' is the thread referred to. I'd like to know why it has disappeared. Technical error?, a mere slip of a finger on the delete button? A real or perceived violation of the board's posting rules? Please..whoever...speak up!

Mark - I intend to tweak it until the electrons fall out on the floor with their tongues hanging out. On air. And keep doing it until I get it right.

Any 'recipes' for punishing electrons using a similar set up are very welcome.

Thanks OzzFan....I have a better understanding now. Can I expect any measurable difference running the 64 bit optimized app with SETI?

This is not just idle chatter on my part...I'm about to start the build of a new cruncher. Asus Maximus Formula, Q6600, 8GB 800Mhz ram, Vista 64 bit and was hoping I'd made all the right choices consistent with my budget.....I'm sure it'll do a decent job of crunching.

Well...off to the build.

Thank you all for your responses.

The question then becomes: Why wouldn't a system processing larger chunks each clock cycle be faster? Again, all other things equal. Pardon me if the answer is obvious but I am far from having a passable understanding of the intricacies of computing.

What performance increase could one expect using Vista 64 bit rather than Vista 32 bit crunching Seti?

Perhaps when the much vaunted "rebate" reaches the crunchers mail boxes later this year some small percentage might be designated for SETI. And how about a small percentage from your tax return (should you be so lucky)? Please keep it in mind. I plan to do both.

I haven't quite made up my mind....I have one Q6600 running now and I agree with the crunchers here..they're like a small block Chevy..great workhorse, great bang for the buck, easy to hotrod... I'm thinking of waiting a bit to see what Intel is going to charge for the new 45nm quads when they're released.

If the Q6600 drops in price significantly I will probably get one as an interim step to something more powerful down the road (Nehalem). I think I'm future proofed for perhaps a year or 18 months with the Max Formula (except for DDR2 memory).

I bought an Asus Maximus Formula MB at NewEgg for $250.00 last week.

Mutasem - That is too little data on which to make a judgement as to whether it is an "unusual" signal.

I was referring to a desktop. I suppose the dense, compact design of a lap top would tend to run hotter. 60C may well be acceptable. There are many here more knowledgeable than I. Let's hope they step in to advise.

Mr. Verster - That is almost certainly too hot for long life.

My Q6600 is OC'd to 3.13GHz and, if I can believe the software, the core is running at 49C-51C at 100% and an ambient temp of 22C. I've read the G0 stepping is good to 71C but I'd wonder about the longevity in that environment. On the other hand, my AMD 6600+ has been running SETI at 100% for months at 60C and no problems.

Just a follow up. All worked well (just follow the instructions)and it has made a noticeable difference. The AMD and the Q6600 are now taking much larger bites of each WU. I have no hard numbers but my guess is a 20% improvement is a fair estimate. Thanks.

Thank you for that info. I'm glad it's so simple. Of course that made it simple for me to screw it up too. I'll be more careful this time. Again, Thanks!
