chmod'd and chown'd all files after unzipping. boinc:boinc rwxrwxrwx still gives the permission denied error.

Did you also change the directories (including the parent)? BOINC needs write access to directories in order to create new files.

Probably you didn't save the file in ANSI mode.

I was under the impression that you can't use the gpu when running
as a service. Something about how the drivers load.

That's only true for windows versions after XP.

The file size shows as 0 after download.

That can't be the correct size. No wonder that BOINC doesn't accept the files and tries to redownload them.

Somehow, you'll have to download the files completely before retrying to run BOINC.

Did you download them to a new (empty) directory?

Windows: "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" --detach_console

That's including the quotes, as you're giving a command to a protected Windows directory.

I (still:-) think the quotes are needed because the pathname contains blank spaces and not because it's a protected directory. ;-)

Check the size and MD5 checksum of the manually downloaded files. Then stop BOINC completely (not only the manager) and set the read-only flag for the picture files after copying them to the project folder. After restarting BOINC, do a project update.

What do you think the relevant location is?

Do you stop the BOINC client (not only the manager) before copying the file?

Indeed, your first 45 downloaded tasks got a download error, but only because of missing .jpg files, which could have been caused by your ISP compressing picture files.

However, the last 40 ones seem to have been downloaded successfully. Perhaps the project reset did help. If not, set "Skip image file verification?" to "yes" in your computing preferences.

Are any SETI@home tasks downloaded successfully on your computer now? (Status "running", "waiting to run" or "ready to start")

Why David? John McLeod VII is the winner.

...then when I'm logged in, I navigate back to the team page...

What do you mean by 'navigate back'? Do you use the browser's back button?

If yes, that might be your problem. Try to navigate 'forwards' by using the links on the top/bottom of each page.

If not, do you have cookies enabled in your Internet browser? They are needed by BOINC to remember your login details.

Thanks. Not sure how you did that but will take a harder look.

Just quote my message (again), without actually posting it. In the quoted part, you'll see the BBCode tags I've used. Oh, and I had to add/delete some tab characters; the Preview button is your friend! ;-)

Unfortunately, forum protocol apparently doesn't allow table formatting ...

As link already mentioned, that would look like this:-)

If the tasks run without problems (32bit compatibility libs installed), let them run. AFAIK, there isn't a significant difference between platform versions regarding performance.

The BOINC client appears to start & run OK (boinc_client --daemon) but complains that my app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of SETI@Home v7.

And rightly so ;-) as your app_info.xml only references setiathome_enhanced, but it should contain references to setiathome_v7.

Excerpts from my client_state.xml:
<name>setiathome_v7</name>
<app_name>setiathome_v7</app_name>

You can install newer BOINC versions (post rev 5), just not using the windows installer.

If you want to use only the CPU, you can also revert to BOINC 5.10.45 (last pre rev 6 version).

I never tried the installation without installer, so I can't help with that, but I have seen forum threads about the topic, either here or at the BOINC dev boards.

Is there any more advice on the GPU work showing graphics?

The SETI@home MultiBeam application for the GPU doesn't have a graphic part included. I'm not sure about the AstroPulse application.

Try the following FAQ entry: Windows Installer Error 1706: Setup cannot find the required files / 1714: older version cannot be removed / BOINC.msi cannot be found / The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable / Error 1325. is not a valid short name

First, you should set all your projects to "No new tasks" (BOINC manager advanced view / Projects tab). When all tasks are finished, uploaded and reported, detach from (delete) all projects. Then reattach (add) all projects you wish as returning user using your current email address.

That's all. :-)
