Seti Boinc and Windows 8 Metro Apps
(Message 1316061)
Posted 16 Dec 2012 by Swordfish Post: Hi all I know, this might seem a little off topic here, but the only project I am running currently is SETI, so I've posted this here. If I want to suspend CPU and/or GPU tasks , I can, by setting the relevant .exe file in Boinc Exclusive Applications. How on earth do I do that with a windows 8 Metro app. I'm finding those apps such as our 4OD and other video apps will become jerky, as BOINC is still running in the background. Yes, I can de-activate BOINC or suspend it, but I was wondering how it could be done automatically, as is done in BOINC Exclusive Applications. The Metro apps seem to run in an environment of their own, and don't seem to have individual .exe files that I can suspend. |

Windows 8 up and running Boinc and Seti
(Message 1301610)
Posted 3 Nov 2012 by Swordfish Post: Yes thanks Sp@ceNv@der I have tried the classshell start button etc on the release preview of Windows 8, and it works great. However, I'm not installing this on my newly W8 upgraded network, as I found that I simply don't need it. As I get used to windows 8 , the lack of a start button is not really a issue, as there are different ways to access those areas. |

My Apologies to wingmen and wingwomen
(Message 1301607)
Posted 3 Nov 2012 by Swordfish Post: I must apologise again. I have been upgrading my Network to windows 8 and have lost around 1200 work units, and about 70 inconsistants . The desktops have had a complete clean install of W8, upgrading from a clean install of W7. Both desktops, have a spare 1TB hard drive , so I used those. Both dual boot, or tri boot with W7, and Ubuntu. On re-installing the project I noticed that one computers, was generating computational errors on ATI GPU tasks. I quickly tracked this down.I forgot to update the W8 generic driver to the latest ATI driver12.10. As soon as I done that, the ATI GPU WU's began to report OK again. Everything appears to be settling down again. The laptop, I upgraded directly, over the pre installed version of w7. That's reporting OK Again my apologies for the errored WU's |

Windows 8 up and running Boinc and Seti
(Message 1299319)
Posted 27 Oct 2012 by Swordfish Post: Before yesterday, I had Windows 7 dual booting with Ubuntu on C drive. Yesterday, I installed Windows 8 my spare D drive, which had been used to test Windows 8 release preview. The installation was pretty sound, and recognised, all my hardware, except for my secondary printer, which was installed with a generic driver - no problem. Boinc is now running Seti in Windows 8 being monitored by Efmer task manager, along with throttle - no problems. I'm basically going to mirror the setup on Windows 7 to Windows 8 by installing all software as fresh installs. Yes I could of upgraded directly, but I want to retain Windows 7 for the time being for reference. Will take some time, but I got plenty. Once that's, done, I'll do the same on the other 2 computers. Yes Windows 8 is a bit strange as you get used to it, and the lack of the start button on desktop, is not that much of a problem. I've got office 2010 Pro installed on Windows 8 as well and that's working fine. Yes, Windows 8 boots straight into the apps screen, but with one click, your on desktop. I'll make a final judgement, when I load Windows 8 with the same software as I've got installed on Windows 7. |

Aborted Tasks
(Message 1297546)
Posted 21 Oct 2012 by Swordfish Post: Thanks for those comments Bill I'll run with a GPU count of 1 for a week, and then see if I can move to .33 again. I was more worried about WUs that reached 100% staying there and not moving from BOINC Manager preventing others from starting. Anyway, I'm currently running with app_inf set to count 1 and everthing is running and reporting ok. Again thanks Bill |

Aborted Tasks
(Message 1297151)
Posted 20 Oct 2012 by Swordfish Post: I'm using Radeon HD 6670 Min work buffer is 5.00 days, Max additional work buffer is 0.01 I've reset the app_info count settings from .33 back to default 1 It seems to be reporting ok now, but I did get another 200 ATI files today. Funny my other computer has the same grahics card, virtually the same setup, and that is running 3 ATI tasks ok using count settings .33 This computer was also running ok until a few days ago using the count setting of .33 I'll leave both running with a default count setting of 1 See if things settle down, then ajust the count settings back to .33 Running 3 ATI tasks on the card, didnt seem to affect my set up, other than cause video to stutter occasionally. I therefor included settings in BOINC exclusive apps, to suspend BOINC if I am using iexplore.exe, vlc.exe and googleearth.exe. Temperatures are about 48C for the other computer GPU and about 56 for this one. CPU temps are about the same as the GPU |

(Message 1296706)
Posted 18 Oct 2012 by Swordfish Post: Guys I appreciate what has been said, but whats has happened of late, is abnormal for my set-up, and these taks hang at 100% preventing other tasks from running. I never get this many ATI GPU tasks. The other computer is almost identical to this one, and its running as this one was until a day or 2 ago. I had changed nothing on my computer before these tasks downloaded Anyway I've taken drastic action on this computer by detatching from the project, deleting all Boinc and Seti files including those in the program file and data directories. Reinstalled Boinc, reattached Seti, and optimised it for Ati gpu tasks with my backed copy of L*****c. I cant get any Ati tasks at present as Seti server is saying "this computer has finished a daily quota of 10 tasks" |

Posted 18 Oct 2012 by Swordfish Post: It happened again Whats going on here. Another 800 ATI GPU tasks downloaded today. I should only get around 30 maximum. 2 of thses 800 tasks have reached 100% and just stay there. They appear to hang preventing futher ATI tasks from starting. I'm in the dark here, so I've reset the project this time, and wait to see what happens tomorrow. Setis servers wont allow any more saying the computer has finished a daily quota of 1 tasks What-ever that appears to mean ? Can anyone throw any light on this annoying problem |

(Message 1296101)
Posted 17 Oct 2012 by Swordfish Post: I've had to abort over 800 ATI tasks on one of my machines. Over the last day or 2 , 800 ATI tasks suddenly downloaded, which is very strange as I only usually have at most 20 waiting and 3 running. I noticed later that these tasks began to hang at 100% in Boinc Manager. I'm not prepared to mince around with this, as 800 ATI tasks should not have downloaded in the first place. I normally only get anything from 1-30, with my settings of 5.00 and 0.01 days of work. CPU tasks are unaffected. My other pc processing CPU and ATI tasks are also unaffected. I've therfore aborted these tasks, and will await further tasks, and see how they progress. Never had this occurence before. Apology to Wingpeople, but I simply have not got time to faff around with this |

Aborted several Astropulse Tasks
(Message 1280498)
Posted 6 Sep 2012 by Swordfish Post: astropulse appears to grind to a snails pace hogging system resources. Multibeam tasks run ok. I'm not bothered, as I run ATI Astropulse Tasks on Arthur and Lancelot. I'm happy with that, and all I wanted to do is apologise to wingpeople, that 8 Atropulse tasks were aborted. Although, you seem to want to get to the bottom of this Claggy, and I thank you for your interest, but I think it's time to call a day on this. I will just re-iterate Morena, will not be requesting tasks for Astropulse. Its not the end of the world , lmaooooo |
